Don’t you think that is a reasonable inference to draw? Typically, injured athletes get surgery where it will help them recover and play again. Since none has been discussed or proposed, this seems like a fair inference to me.
- iamscore2day

No as very little has been said as to what is wrong. If surgery wasn't an option then why not just come out and say it? If they did then my apologies as didn't see that said.

Until I see clear concrete proof as to what is wrong can’t imagine no procedure can help, even a little, whatever ails him.

I’ll never believe anything but the worst case scenario or dumbest decision and analysis from the Flyer’s medical staff unless an MD actually standing in front of me, in person, holding their diplomas tells me that they have seen all the information that the Flyers medical staff has seen and agree with their statement.

I trust Chuck Fletcher’s ability to be gm less than that.

I get the signing to, but it doesn't mean I don't hate it. I understand the Flyers want to build an identity, one that matches what I believe is now an antiquated view of the people of Philadelphia. You have heard it a hundred times, Philly is made up of blue collar workers that appreciate a tough team that stands up and over-achieves. Its a comforting and familiar identity but not one that I believe accurately represents the city any longer, and certainly not one that I think can win in today's NHL. The path for the Flyers after the past two seasons was to stock up for the 2023 draft, accumulate the high-end talent the franchise desperately needs to begin to build a consistent winner here. Torts could certainly be part of this, teaching these young players how to play the right way, and then eventually, a few years down the road that is the time to augment these high end young and dynamic players with a ND and Tony DeAngelo type of player. But not now, and not even next year. Sure, it will be fun to watch ND and Tony slam an opposing player, but in the end, when they are in the box all they will be doing is watching the other team, who has those high end players, scoring goals on their resulting PP, nothing more!

The only fan base that should be obsessed with a fourth line player should be for a team that either won or came close to winning the Stanley Cup. We have so many things to fix, I just can’t get excited about this guy. Like so many things that Chuck has done, I am not a big fan. But, this team has bigger fish to fry.

There are a lot of questions to ask about this entire situation. On the other hand, it seems very clear to me that lack of any discussion about surgery is significant. Let’s put it this way, if surgery could’ve fixed this situation and it was not done, that would be a highly unusual departure from the norm in every professional sport.

I think Comcast cares about wins and loses in the general sense. They know a winning team will bring more people out to games, buy merch, etc. I do not believe they know how to build a winning organization.

Much bigger fish and the GM has shown that he is not a good chef.

I agree. He should run nothing more complicated than a two car parade.

Not according to the organization. There was a big market for Big D Nick Deslauriers. It's a nice get for the company.

Fletcher put a great offer together and got his guy. Will make this team super tough to play against. Grit. Sandpaper. Takes the body. The "hit sumbodies!!" fans in the crowd are gonna love this guy.

Sadly enough, I think that captures the “thinking” that went into this decision.

You don’t do that role and continue to play in the the NHL with a limited amount of skill unless your the hardest worker on the team. I’m not in love with the signing but I get it it….he’s intense, he’s tough and unlike a lot of guys that have come through here the last few years he knows his (frank)ing roll. The Flyers lack elite talent…ND in no way answered that issue….but they also lack other intangibles that ND was probably signed for….

The commenter stated they didn't think ND was a Torts type player. If he really isn't I don't believe Torts will play him just to satisfy Chuck. I don't doubt ND is a hard worker.

I think Provorov will have an improved season under Torts over Konency but I don’t think DeAngelo is the solution as a partner.

I think Couturier’s health is irrelevant to the success of this team. He’ll help but I don’t think he’ll have the same Giroux impact.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the signing of Deslauriers was driven by Torts but either way, it wasn’t a smart signing. To answer two questions at once, I think this signing will be the reason we don’t see Cates as a regular this season. I think Farabee, JvR, Laughton and Deslauriers will likely regular time on the left side.

- SuperSchennBros

Myrtetus and Bill think Noah Cates is player Torts will love. I think JVR might be the odd man out, which will hurt his trade value at the deadline.

What happened to the rehab plan Ryan Ellis spoke about four and a half months ago?

https://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=117214

The most noteworthy news to come out of the day was that Ryan Ellis spoke to the media after talking with Chuck Fletcher. Ellis said that he will not require surgery to deal with "multi-layered" core muscle issues in the lower abdomen/pelvic region that limited him to four games (the first three and then a one-game return a month later) the entire 2021-22 season.

Ellis said he felt confident that the treatment and strengthen regimen that has been designed will effectively take care of the issue. Ellis said the process is underway and the general plan is to gradually step up the intensity of workouts in the gym and then. a few weeks later, to start skating again. July and August will be the key months to be ready come training camp.

This is just my take. Torts has to know Chuck is on a somewhat hot seat. Or in theory he should be. So IMO I do not think he will be in 100% sync with what the GM may want. He is going to do his own thing coaching this team (or he should). He has to know he has some lead way seeing how the Flyers owe AV and would look very bad if he is also canned early on. So will Chuck let Torts have a lot of say?

Now a question I have will the GM give the coach the internal players he may want if it differs from what the GM wants.

Does it even matter if Chuck is on the hot seat? We know what the plan is. It is for Fletcher to relinquish the GM job for the President's role and have the next puppet Danny Briere step in to the GM role.

Comcast will brand this as a bold hire and a bold new step forward for the organization when in reality it is same circus different clowns.

This organization is in the worst spot it can possibly be in professional sports.

Agree 100%. Torts at this point probably has the attitude I will do it may way. He will not tow the line so to speak. If not fire me and I will go back to TV if need be. With your 16 million. He knows this is his last job. Unless a miracle.

I don't know if ND is a Torts player or not but 100% agree with the premise of your post. I don't see Torts playing someone based on what Chuck wants, but Chuck does control the roster, which leads to what you've been questioning about Tanner and Wade being sent down.

I don’t think it would be smart to play Cates ahead of JvR…or play Deslauriers ahead of anyone.

Maybe the Flyers Brass is grooming Torts to become the next GM when they can Fletcher after this season or the next.
