Ottawa Senators are bringing in Derick Brassard & Michael Dal Colle in on PTOs for training camp, just announced on Sens Twitter! - Kevin Francis
The GM still allows DJ Smith to bring in who he wants, this is getting ridiculous! Josh Brown was bad enough....then he brought Hainsey and Zaitsev before that....now a LW in Dal Cole. Ugh!
Jack Capuano too on this....they might as well bring in Josh Ho Sang too.....why didn't these high picks in the 1st round work out in NYI? |
|
|
|
YAY....lets give DJ more old slow footed toys to use instead of the players he should be playing.
This is bad juju. |

I have no issue to bring in players on PTO. Really the issue has been that the team signs too many depth players that block deserving young players like Kastelic and Thomson.
Going into this season, only 2 changes need to be made to the roster - add a true top 4 Dman to play the right side and the subtraction of Zaitsev via trade or demotion to the AHL.
|
|
|
|
Dal Colle - if this is really about a potential AHL role, then fine. Anything more is a complete waste of time.
Brassard - few players have ever played for 7 different NHL teams in a 4 year span. He could provide some veteran insurance, and if it's just a $1M contract it could be useful (e.g. if Pinto should have another 5GP season). But it's still just a PTO... and to Dorion's credit, at least he didn't give up Norris and a 2nd round pick to bring him in. |

Sounds like camp will be pretty entertaining don’t you think? Maybe some temper’s will raise? |

I think these players are being brought in on PTOs to hedge against possibly losing a player or two. Formenton still unsigned either means a chip has to fall or he's trade bait. If he's out for a D man we have a hole at 3LW. I don't think Motte is the solution there, but Brass could be. |

Sanderson practicing on the the right side for the game tonight, since there arne't a lot of RHD at camp.
Likely 0 chance that would be seen outside this tourney, but would be funny if he was put there to start the season, so suddenly the big gap would be on the LHD going forward. |

Watch Brassard get a DelZotto type deal.
Also Trevor Neufeld's cap analysis over in the Calgary blog is an excellent read. |

Thanks for heads up on Neufeld's cap analysis. Great stuff.
Cap space is an asset. Hopefully folks will recognize that losing an impending UFA player "for nothing" is not the worst thing that can happen. The worst thing you can do is overpay them on a long term retirement deal.

It's certainly a valid point to consider... if they're so willing to consider giving up a major trade return in order to flip Chychrun over to his off-side, why not consider just playing Chabot at RHD? It's hard to believe he wouldn't be able to make the transition fairly effectively, especially if it facilitated their ability to find him a high-quality defence partner.

Hell, it was a disaster even when they went and gave Michalek/Greening new contracts instead of letting them go as UFA. Some people have even been bellyaching about Paul (age 27) signing a $3.15M/7yrs deal... not sure that's going to look too good when he's on the wrong side of 30 for more than 1/2 the term. |

Why don't the Sens sign PK Subban to a 1 year contract !?!
Look at what Evander Kane did in Edmonton on a show me contract. He could be one of the best pick ups this season. I think it's worth the risk with what the Sens are looking for! |

Dubas will walk Auston Matthews to UFA in two years at age 27. At that point he's off to LA for 7 x 15, and the next TO rebuild begins.
Simmer is just rattling cages. It would be bad for all of the business of hockey for Matthews to leave Toronto. I think he stays. But it is going to cost the Leafs $15m x 8.
Long term deals with Chabot, Tkachuk, Norris, Stutzle, Batherson looking very solid. |

Yes...but to be honest, none of those players are Matthews.
The contracts the Sens are giving out are market appropriate but they also prevent what happened with Stone.
Dubas made the mistake of not making Matthew's deal 7 or 8 years. Should have stood his ground.

Matthews camp wanted 5 to bring him to UFA while still getting big dollars. But I agree with you. Dubas was the same with Marners deal too.

Too big a personality in the locker room that has a terrific culture, don't mess with it. Plus PK has really lost a step with his skating and defending.

I truly don't get it especially after PD said he wouldn't do any agent or player any favours in offering a PTO...what a surprise he lied to the fanbase again....there is no need to have Michael in here on a PTO not after you signed Jayce H and Tyler Motte plus Brassard who can play all 3 forward positions.
