Devon Toews will be the first one to go. Only one year after this upcoming season. And no clauses listed. Anybody with more term, they will have to take something back, or they will have to give up future draft picks.

Except Toews is the best Avalanche blueliner not named Makar, Sakic will do everything he can to keep him.

The timing of this deal is questionable.

We joke about this, but eventually this catches up to teams who find themselves in this spot. It took the Hawks five or six seasons before it finally caught up, but it does happen. The biggest blow to the Hawks was when Hossa retired, and that was when they should have started the rebuild in earnest, after his retirement.

The biggest blow came when the rapidly growing cap suddenly and unexpectedly flattened immediately after the Wonder Twins signed their big contracts.

Yes, they really weren't expecting that.
I had read at that time the Cap was going to increase and double in the next 7 years around that time.

You pay your stars when they win a Cup.

Just as with the the Blackhawk ascent (except it came with Cups). the Oil has their hopes tied to the draft picks in the past years to fill supplement job roles w/o having to break the budget.

From Dylan Holloway, rough n tumble Reid Schaefer, along with the seasoned young vets Ryan McLeod, and Kailer Yamamoto and the defenseman hopeful Philip Broberg these are their "permanent replacements."

I can see Jesse Puljujarvi packing his bags to hold the salary line and maybe, just maybe get them a young guy in a prospect swap.

To think they could have traded him for Kirby Dach. #Sakicepicfail.

The Avs would certainly get a better return with Toews. Trading the other D-men who have more term will be more of a challenge. They probably won't be able to give him the contract he deserves, either.

They do what the Islanders did with Toews, they trade Gerard (24 y.o. making $5 mil.) for a couple of draft choices. With E. Johnson contract up next year, they free up $11.1 mil. of money allocated to the defense, I can't see Toews getting more than $6 or $7 million, and probably for 4 to 5 years as an extension after next year.

Byram basically took Gerard's spot when Gerard was injured in the playoffs.

Girard will still have four more seasons at a $5 mill cap hit. How easy is it to trade such a contract, especially if he is dealing with injury issues? They'll probably also have to move Josh Manson's contract. If Byram is going to get paid, and they want to give Toews a new contract.

Well if they have to, they will give Girard, Manson, etc. away for nothing like Vegas did Pacioretty.

There are plenty of teams looking for a young experience defenseman (although puny), Detroit?, Philadelphia? Seattle? New Jersey to name a few

if Sakic is as fantastic a GM as most on the BOD says, he should have no problem keeping Toews.

Yes, if. But they will also probably have to trade Josh Manson, who has a full NTC until the summer of 2024. We all know too well how an NTC can gum up the work when addressing a cap crunch.

Vegas has had to move a number of players to address their never ending cap situation. It's not a painless process for them, either.

Does anyone know what happens with the Hagel trade Tampa picks if they happen to land in the top 10? Do they transfer to the next year or something? I know its not likely to happen, just wondering.

If Tampa's 2023 pick is in positions 1 - 10, wouldn't the Blackhawks get Tampa's 2024 draft pick, but because that is conditional would they get Tampa's 2025 pick? And then in 2024 if Tampa's pick is in 1 - 10 spot would Chicago get their 2025 pick?

If 2023 pick is top 10, it becomes a 2025 unprotected. If 2023 and 2024 are both top 10 they become 2025 and 2026 unprotected.

Edit. And if 2023 is not top 10 it's the Hawks. Then if 2024 pick is top 10 it becomes a 2025 unprotected

I recall there's a formula where they could unfortunately become 2nd round picks. I don't know exactly what it is and over what time frame?
