Not biggest as % of cap. He got paid. He was under paid in his last deal now he’s more at market value.

It’s a bit more than I expected but fair.

I knew me and Cooleus and 13Sundin13 knew what we were talking about. Considering cap projections - this is a very fair contract for Colorado.

As expected...media overreacts and are blown away. Smart readers knew that $12-13M was a fair number. I predicted $12.5M x 8 for an even $100M. It was $12.6M. Off by less than 1%. No sources here. Just a knowledge of the sport...

The sell of the deal to the player is that it's the highest in the league. This will make Matthews' next contract discussions very interesting.

Matthews? Hell, what's Makar going to ask for?

Makar signed a six year deal last summer. He'll likely be comically underpaid by the end of it.

He was always going to get it so I'm not surprised, but I just don't think it is a good deal. Over his career he has averaged 72 points per season, and in that same time he has played an average of 70.1 games per season. That makes him just slightly over a point per game player.

I know the numbers don't tell the whole story and that he is a generational talent, but I'm not sold that this is a win for the Avs over the next 8 seasons if those averages maintain pace. Just my opinion though.

Too much money , if your team wants to win more cups , No team has won a cup with a player making more than 10 million on the cap .

Maybe next year he'll get his first 100 point season and score more than 41 goals.

I know that this could easily dismissed as an Avs fan rationalizing away some numbers but a switch clearly flipped in 2017 and he's been essentially a 100+ point pace player since then, in the Top 3 of the Hart for 3 of the last 5 years. He's said in interviews that he sort of rededicated himself at that point to really maximize his talent and did things like invest in a personal chef and trainer and transformed into the sort of crazy obsessive he's now known to be.

In short what I'm saying is I think looking at his career average numbers is very misleading in his particular case. Also of note, he's the 6th leading playoff points per game producer in NHL history and three of the people above him on the list (McDavid, Draisaitl and Barry Pederson) have played half of the playoff games of MacKinnon.

Edited to add: Even factoring in his good but not great first 4 seasons, he's a point per game player.

If this deal ages like Patrick Kane, then it's OK-ish.

If this deal ages like Jonathan Toews, then

He already took a discount his last contract. Think of this as money owed on the backend. Though, it might be tougher for the Avs to stay competitive or have quality depth.

As has been said many times he really didn't take a discount. Look at his numbers the three years before it and the first year after it. Many people actually thought it was a slight overpay at the time. He was 24-39-63, 14-24-38 and 21-31-52 before he signed that contract and 16-37-53 the first season after signing it.

He already "gave at the office" on his previous contract ... and he's won a cup, so there's no need for him to compromise on the issue of his current market value.

Fair deal for MaK. Will be increasingly team friendly for the Avs as the years go provided the cap rises as expected.

Also love what this means for a Matthews extension in 2024. Barring anything unforeseen it should be easy to get him to sign at $13.5 aav or less. Using the same sell line of “highest paid in the league”. Only variable will be term. Hopefully MLSE and whomever is GM will get 8years this time 🤞🏾

What's your point? From 2017/2017 to 21/22, he's at 1.31 PPG. Who else compares other than McJesus and his German friend? Bread? Mathews? Can you imagine Colorado trying to argue that his number should be lower because from 2013/14-16/17, he was still developing and playing on some bad teams?

It's crazy how little NHL players make compared to everyone else. Soto's turning down $440 million. Lamar's turning down $250 million. Basketball's pushing 50 million a year. Soccer's pushing 40. In a few years, MLS players will be making more.
