INSANITY continues in Hockey and all sports are really way out of touch with the real world. A big turnoff to everyday people who are just trying to get along and survive
When will the insanity ever stop. I SAY NEVER

Maybe next year he'll get his first 100 point season and score more than 41 goals.
- stevens87

Maybe he'll score another 25 pts in the playoffs and win a Cup again too

It's crazy how little NHL players make compared to everyone else. Soto's turning down $440 million. Lamar's turning down $250 million. Basketball's pushing 50 million a year. Soccer's pushing 40. In a few years, MLS players will be making more.

All sports are just stupid I hope they all fold Maybe when the fans wake up and just say no it will change But fans are too stupid to do that

So asking for more than 41 goals or one 100 point season is that being unreasonable?

The sell of the deal to the player is that it's the highest in the league. This will make Matthews' next contract discussions very interesting.

"With a rising cap, this contract will look cheap and be a bargain in a few years."

That being said: guy earned his cheddar.

Um, what? Why should fans care about what athletes get paid?

If you're the best in the world at something, you're going to make a ton of money no matter what you do.

If someone's willing to pay you, you're worth it.

Of course fans should care. Most people can’t afford to go to games. As tv goes away leagues have to turn to streaming and game betting to make revenues. I personally have not watched a NFL/NBA game in years. If more fans turn away from pro sports for their entertainment it will eventually start to reverse revenues. I dont see it happening for a loooong time though as there are too many idiots with nothing better to do.

Um, welcome to the real world. Everything in our society is designed to make the most money possible. Why should sports be any different? How much an athlete is paid has nothing to do with it. Owners would still be trying to maximize revenue if athletes were paid peanuts.

Sports is an area where it really doesn't matter, so why complain? Most people can't afford to live in nice houses (or even any houses), go to the best schools, eat at the best restaurants, go to the best vacation spots, drive the best cars, get the best medical treatment, and on and on and on. Sports are the last thing we should be worried about.

I'm sure everyone agrees that living in a communist utopia would be great, but we don't.

If this deal ages like Patrick Kane, then it's OK-ish.

If this deal ages like Jonathan Toews, then

- PDO-Speedwagon

MacKinnon is a far superior player to Toews. Toews played on a better team for most of his career. Might be the most overrated player of his generation.

You know, people say stupid things on the internet to make themselves feel good but your rage toward everything really is astounding.

If you hate sports, why are you on a sports website? Are fans just stupid in your opinion because they love hockey?

Genuinely don't understand your point of view.

Yes but eventually it comes down to choices. I can afford to go to games but I choose not to. That wasn’t the case 15 years ago. As more people make different choices revenue will eventually stop going up. I do t really expect that in my lifetime but some day it will change.

The beauty of it is you can vote with your feet and not go. Don’t buy a tv package, a jersey or any memorabilia. But you can’t control choices others make.

Some people like to bet on games. Some think it’s stupid but it’s their money and they make choices.

Pens open at home against the Yotes on Oct. 13. You going?

The only reason this bothers me is that I am one year away from being a physician. I am 29 years old, meaning I have not made a cent yet. I have actually never had a job besides summer jobs in-between school. If I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, I'd still have another 7 or so years to go of residency, meaning I'd be finally done my "education" by age 36 to be one of the best in my field... I still wouldn't be making over $1million a year. So I find it hard to justify 22+ year olds getting paid millions! But thats my two cents, of course I did not go into medicine for the money! Just puts into perspective how crazy it is that professional athletes (or even celebrities) get paid.

Dr. Patrick Soon Shiong is worth more than 7 billion. Dr. James Andrews is worth more than 10 million. If you're not making more than a million, you aren't the best in your field. For example, Rutgers' top neurosurgeon is making 3 million.

There are far, far, far, far more neurosurgeons in the world than there are hockey players of MacKinnon's ability. I'm not saying hockey players are more important than doctors, but where there are only a handful of people in the world who are better at your profession, you deserved to get paid. MacKinnon can make the case that there aren't ten people on the planet better at his profession than he is. Can you make that case?

The average hockey player makes far less than the average doctor.

Too much money , if your team wants to win more cups , No team has won a cup with a player making more than 10 million on the cap .

Yes but it's more about cap % than cap hit.

No, but it isn't raising much of a relevant issue when you look at Nate's 1.31 PPG for the last 5 seasons and his playoff performances.

Hey party peoples. sorry to spam, but desperate times.

I've been running a 20 team yahoo league for the past 12 years and always have a few openings. It's primarily hockeybuzz peoples (though now I realize it would've made sense for people to use their hockeybuzz names as their team names.. but I digress).

20 teams, large rosters, live snake draft, no keepers, no money. The draft takes about 2.5 hours, so it's an experience.
Stats include the usual plus FW, hits, blocks.
Draft date isn't finalized yet.
Draft will likely the evening of Friday the 23rd, closer to 7EDT on Saturday the 1st, or closer to 930EDT on Sunday the 2nd.

Send me a message if you're interested!

The problem is a contract like this forces other players contracts to be overpaid. Jake Guentzel has scored 40 goals twice, has scored 34 goals in just 58 playoff games and was a big reason why The Pens won the Cup in 2017. Now a player like him will say "well I may not be as complete a player but I'm worth at least 75% as good".
