As much as people think the Roster is set.. It is not
Few spots up for grabs.
Decisions on JJ and Quinn. Is Kulich serious about the big club this year?
Whos the 6th and 7th D? I don't think its clear cut for Bryson.
Lybush or Joker in the top 4?
Will Mitts be a C or W. Will Krebs be a C or W.
Where does Vinnie fit for opening night roster.
Some great internal competition this year. - DirtyDan
I was about to say the same things. Plus are Comrie and/or 6K going to push Anderson to be #1? If Quinn and/or Peterka have great camps, does Olo become redundant/trade bait? Even the new guy, is he a lock at 4C?

He's already trade bait based on the contract he signed. |

Seems like Quinn and Peterka are locks for the NHL roster. Where in the lineup is the only question.
Kulich isn't making the NHL roster with their ability to send him to the AHL and play things safe with him.
Are the 6th and 7th defense positions really a big deal, or greatly impactful to the NHL roster?
Does it matter much whether Jokiharju and Lyubushkin are on the 2nd or 3rd pair? What matters with the defense is the trio of Dahlin, Samuelsson and Power continuing to improve.
Do the positions really matter with Mittelstadt or Krebs?
I'm still failing to see the great internal competition for the NHL roster when it's almost entirely already set. |

I think our defense is going to be top tier this year. Power and Dahlin are going to be stars. How many teams have two #1 overall D on their teams? |

Almost time to go, boys and girls, if any are reading. It was a great offseason for the #1 prospect pool of the NHL, but a rather disappointing one for the NHL Buffalo Sabres. While additions of young prospect forwards and a thug-lite defenseman are welcome, the glaring need for well over a calendar year was goaltending. Kevin Adams decided his prospect pool was more important than his NHL goaltending from the 21 offseason, through the entirety of the 21-22 season, and tripled-down on that decision this offseason. Eric Comrie was a last ditch effort and has the resume to show for it. Bringing back Craig Anderson after his sub .900 save % season as anything other than a coach is questionable. I can't imagine he's gotten better or younger this offseason, but he comes cheap. These are the goalies we have; these are the goalies we shall root for. More's the pity.
On the good side, Kevin Adams signed His Tallness to what will become known as a steal of a deal. Let's not forget we have Tage for the next 8 years for 51.6 mil. 6.45 a year. Not too shabby for a guy who is going to score 40 this season.
I'd like to see the season start with our two best line combinations in tact. Those are, of course 53, 72, 89 and 74, 37, 71. Fill in the other two lines with the new kids, skinny boy Krebs, and stone hands Cozens. Let's all pray Cozens found his scoring touch in international play and Krebs stops sucking like AOC at a frat party. Who really knows what to expect from JJP and JQ? I'd love to say I expect 30 goals from Quinn, but that's unfair. I think I'll be disappointed if he has less than 20 though... maybe 25. JJP needs to come up and be immediately good in all zones. I don't need a ton of points out of him, but I need a point every other game and sound defensive play.
It will be a true shame if we see a number of games akin to the April 14th 6 - 2 loss to St. Louis where we dominated the game, but lost easily thanks to our swiss cheese netminders. This is year three for Adams and he has yet to produce a team even remotely close to the playoffs. He should be fired if that happens again this season. Running out AHL goaltending year after year is a failure of his job and a slap in the face of fans who want to support a winning product. It's also a slap in the face of the players up front who are good enough to win more games than they do because of the goaltending Kevin Adams and his staff saddle them with.
All that said, Eric Comrie, (I've read the Sabres are aware of this board {rofl}) this is your last and final shot to backstop an NHL team. Fineto. Nothing after this, bub. If you post a .920 save % and play 50 games for the Buffalo Sabres this season, you'll never have to worry about being loved by a fanbase for the rest of your life. I'll be sitting behind your goal every second period for almost every home game. Every one of us wants to cheer. No one wants you to fail. Look up at that #39 in the rafters and know that no one knew who he was when he came to Buffalo. That could be you, son. Nothing between you and it but air and opportunity, as we used to say in the army. |

He took a bridge? Could just be betting on himself. He's turned into a solid all around offensive player and then you add his wicked shot.
Could easily be a 60+ point guy

Neither Quinn or JJ have a lock on the roster. They're expected but certainly not locked in this early.
Kulich probably plays in the A this year but he has the body for the NHL and he can certainly play. Be interesting to see if he is serious about taking a spot in the big this year or if he needs the year in the A.
Internal competition was the topic of discussion and guys pushing for the 6th and 7th spot do matter. Depth matters. Guys pushing for those spots means we have that internal competition which is never a bad thing.
Defiantly does matter how Joker is progressing and where he and Lybush fit. Ideally Lybush is Powers stay at home protective d-man and Joker takes a step forward as a solid 2-way D-man. Those 2 are having an internal competition for the top 4.
Most definatly matters where these guys play. Hockey players have a desired position and whether its Centre or winger they will push each other to be better if they themselves want a certain spot.
Not sure how you refuse to see it. These are good things to have. |
