Well 50% of Islander goals were scored by Salo, so I guess he’s the standout.

Unless he implodes the rest of camp I would say it’s his to lose. He has been arguably the best Islander so far with whatever I’ve watched. Not a tall hill to climb but it would be a bone head move to give it to someone else unless someone else starts stepping up.
I went to the game last night.. I thought the team played well. They seem to be getting their team defense better as the Pre-season progresses.
Barzal and Parise looked pretty good together.. They tried a few guys on that line with the 2 of them and it seemed to click best with Palmieri who is who started on the line.
I know Raty and Holmstrom are probably not going to be on the team for start of season, but both seemed to play pretty well when on the ice. I thought Raty was the better of the 2.
Salo looked very good. He looks much better than Wotherspoon and Hutton for sure. He is just a better skater, passer, and player. He is for sure going to be the 6th guy .. IMO.
I was watching that soshnikov a lot to see how he played. He was very good too. The guys who I thought didn't play well were the guys on the team for the most part. Whalstrom looked terrible, took a really dumb penalty.. Mayfield took a dumb penalty too.
Beau was one of the best players on the ice last night... by the way.
Romanov had about 5 hits and constantly throws the puck at the net when their is a bunch of guys in front... Both of which I loved. He looks like a future fan favorite for sure.
Brock was centering Lee and Beau.. so "Hey Josh.. ooh Ahh" was on the 3rd or 4th line. He still managed to make a bunch of brutal plays in D-zone and his only shot was off a Flyer's face.

At what point during your career did you start to think about staying in hockey after you were done playing?
It was about 12 months before I retired. I broke a couple of bones in my back when I was the captain of the Islanders. I was close with Garth (Snow). We talked about it then.
It was exciting. I had done this for my whole life. I played for 20 years, and I got right back into it. I ended up being his adviser, his assistant GM and an assistant coach. I could still be at the rink, and I went right into it. It’s a great game. It’s given me everything. I had no wish to leave it. It was an honor to be wooed and to stay in the game.
I remember at the time that it was a unique role. What was it like to be part of both staffs, and kind of have a hand in everything?
Yeah, it is funny. I’ve had a lot of questions about that. When you have a really close friend that you’re working with, first as a player for four years and he respected what I had to think about the game. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, but people made it into kind of a big deal. I’d get questions in almost every city we’d go to. A lot of it was, “How do you balance it?” Like 80 percent of the team was guys I had been teammates with. They knew me. There was never any worries about me throwing them under the bus, and Garth would never ask me to. I think it has to be a certain relationship, and I give credit to my boss. He never put me in that position to be out of line (for the players).
When you’re an assistant GM, you’re in on trades and talking about the salary cap and free agents and the minor-league system. I was also an assistant coach, so it was different. But it wasn’t impossible. In six years of doing that, I never had an issue. There were certain things that I would tell Garth, “Look, I’m not going to talk about it.”
I think that’s where I am at again now. I’ve got a good boss that understands that I am going to work and understands that I care about his franchise and what he does. I respect him and he respects me. I had that (on Long Island) and that’s why it worked.
Looking back at your time with the Islanders, is there one success story that you are particularly proud of?
I can give you a few. The Islanders had a lot of success there for a couple of years. Well, who were they? It was guys like Josh Bailey, who has (over 500 career) points. Brock Nelson became a guy who scored (nearly) 40 goals. Matt Martin was a fifth-round pick. The trades we made. I’m just proud because it was a tough situation. But that’s true everywhere. Anytime you get a phone call to talk about a job, well … what was going on there that you’re on this phone call? Probably something wasn’t right. I have the utmost respect for Doug Wilson. He was here for a long time, and he went for it every year. I came into this building with the Oilers and the Blues, and I didn’t like any other building more. It was always a great environment, always fun to play here. And we’re going to get that back.

Thank you. I was curious if he was going to mention the good and bad of the job but he has always been a good professional and would never throw anyone under the bus.
I really liked him until he took the head job and it became "all-star game mentalities" and no one knew the definition of a back check or even defense for that matter.

They couldn't afford to lose their only star player as it would look terrible after tavares leaving. Cap is set to go up now they need to add actual speed youth and talent around him. It's an overpay but they had to retain him imo

It's really not much of an overpay. He was already making $7M and he's the best player they have. Maybe $8.5Mish was his "true value" but that isn't a bad deal

Lou fires trotz and then signs barzal to a max deal. All this is after Barry put barzal on the 3rd line so one has to wonder if this is why Barry was let go
