Look how contracts are made, they make these contracts off of these projections.
It is exactly how it works.
Projections in the past have been accurate give or take a M.
You do not plan for pandemics. - Santo_44
so where did this projection you think is so reliable, come from? who, exactly, has said it will go up by 10m?
I do'nt recall the NHL ever making projections 3 years into the future. They generally only speak to the next seasons cap, based on mid-year gate revenues. |

They always have.
And they always have a general projection so they can create 7-8 year deals.
NHL players aren't signing 7-8 year deals if teams don't use the projections, why would they? an 8M cap hit is an extra million in 3 years. |

you don't know this. There have been unsubstantiated reports that it COULD go up by that.
a) "could" does not mean "likely", and most certainly does not mean "will unless" like you're saying.
b) the key person speaking about this is Bill Daly, who might, just MIGHT, have a vested interest in saying something like that.... right? - prock
I just don't see why Daly would puff up the projections. Why would the league have an interest in flattering the Cap? ...the Union does. Bettman and his squad are always preaching conservative financials.
The league knows their current revenue and based on current revenue the Cap would be X. X is arbitrarily low due to the escrow repayments. All Daly said was that those repayments will be done by summer of 24' so the 24/25' Cap will be based on current (next year) revenues and incomes. Those are pretty predictable ..subject to another pandemic or massive decreases in gate revenue.
A $87/88M cap in 24/25 is lower than I would have expected. |

sbow me. show me one comment out of bettman, ever, making a cap projection three years into the future. Hell, show me one quote of anyone other than Elliote Friedman and "sources" claiming 10m for that matter. |

Exactly this^
And then the cap will start growing at a predictable rate, at least in the ballpark. |

Higher cap encourages bigger contracts, that's why he would be the most likely to be optomistic.
But Daly has never said 10m specifically to my knowledge. He's said "significantly". the 10m was just "sources", through sportsnet.

for the following season, yes. 3 years, no. They start saying "based on attendance so far, it would $XXM next year" |

I think the reference is Friedman. So for clarity Daly makes his comments. Then the Friedge goes to his 'league sources' who tell him that the current belief projects the cap could be 88M in 24/25 and 92M in 25/26. |

Right. but this is my point. This 10M figure, at this point, it's just "sources". This is nothing to bank on.
Maybe (probably) they go up. But banking on them jumping 15 % is a jump to me. |

Right. Why would Daly want higher contracts? He's Bettman's RHM. I think you're thinking of Don Fehr? He will be telling everyone that's listening that the leagues' projections are low and that the Cap will be 100M. |

Yep, you're right, I'm screwing up Daly with Donald Fehr. My bad.
I still think all we have right now is "sources", and we have no idea where or how this 10m amount came from, or how reliable it is. it's just sportsnet saying this right now.
Until this comes in one of those league pressers, where it's Daly, Bettman, whatever, speaking to where they think it will be, then you have to take it with a grain... pound of salt. |

Agreed. It's always that going to be 'projections'. But I think if the league is saying it ...they know it's true. And a huge portion of their income/revenue is very predictable at this point. They know their TV$, their corp$, sales$, and season tix. Walk up gate receipts probably fluctuate on the margins. They know what's up and the league is not going to puff up the numbers. Bettman probably writes Daly's script for him. |

Lol ...alright everything makes sense now. Daly making those comments should give us more confidence. If it were Fehr I'd be right there with you. No way he's underselling. |

They are still subject to change and they often do. Over the last decade there has been many times they projected higher than what the cap actually increased. If a recession settles in you can bet the projections decrease. |

I’m still very curious as to how gate receipts will be affected, post-covid, and more importantly with the new normal of home/office work hybrid.
Last year, Leafs tix for weekday games were not sold out, and the resale market was grim.
Will it rebound this year?
I don’t know. |
