Man the Holl hatred is adorable lol
Is he great? No… he’s your typical 2 million dollar guy (why people expect more is beyond me)
Here’s the truth tho… atm it looks like he’ll be the only rightie in the starting D so please accept he isn’t going anywhere for awhile… he’ll be another Hyman or Mikheyev where they keep him and just let him walk.
With Liljegren hurt it makes Holl the only rightie in the lineup on D. And no, Liljegren is not a top 4 guy on a cup contender yet. So even tho it won’t be liked the best (and only) rightie they currently have for the shutdown roll is Holl. |

A few quick points:
- I'm in the office today. We have been instructed to keep emails and meetings to a bare minimum, and instead spend the day learning. They've done a pretty good job of providing resources.
- It's the same structure as Remembrance Day. Interesting note: the vast majority of veterans groups do NOT want Remembrance Day to be a day off - they most certainly want the kids in schools, so that they can learn about the horrors and sacrifices of war.
- I'll always remember what they said about Martin Luther King Day, when it was first established: "It's a day ON, not a day OFF."
It's a disturbing part of our history, which is why it's so important to learn about it.
Peace, brothers. - Atomic Wedgie
Yeah, it's crappy, no doubt. But the vast majority of people and companies will go about their day as normal, and the vast majority of people with a day off will go have fun.
The schools are probably the only place doing a decent job, as they'll have lessons on it. Giving people a day off will do nothing. |

I talked about it with my son this morning (mostly to explain why Mommy was sleeping in, having the day off).
His main priority was trying to convince me he probably had a native ancestor which made him "ok".
Seems like I failed.

I am 100% in agreement.
And don't even get me started about people who were whinging about not getting the day off for the Queen's funeral. Give me a franking break. |

Just to be clear, I don't hate Holl, I also don't hate Marincin, I didn't hate Brett Lebda or Aki Berg. It certainly wasn't their fault that they are (were) poop. With the current cap situation, should all players become healthy at some point, it looks like a trade is more likely than not.
As a sidenote, I did advocate for the Leafs to select Schneider in the 2020 draft. Selecting Amirov was a poor choice based on the long term needs of the Leafs. Schneider will be a top four defender and is a RHD on a very good NYR squad for a very good price, while I don't have any expectations that Amirov will ever play for the Leafs.
Back to Holl, whether he starts the season with the Leafs is not really the issue in the big picture. The Leafs need to free up some cap space and he is much easier to move than Muzzin IMO. A veteran RHD should be a top priority for management, especially since the 2020 draft (the last time the Leafs selected in round 1) was handled so poorly.

ugh. screw the royals. We have no need for them. Supporting them and our relation to the monarchy is a waste of money, and an even bigger waste of money for Great Britain.
The UK could put the half billion dollars a year it takes to support them to much better use.

Once everyone is healthy moving Holl is no longer enough since they’ll be close to 3 million over now.
That and they’ll just have to find another 2 millionish shutdown d man.
Unless he’s part of a bigger deal that brings another one over I see him being one of those UFAs who go elsewhere the way Dubas let’s players walk for nothing.
The team isn’t going to rely on guys who are unfamiliar with the right side (I hear Rielly has been practicing over there quite a bit), or a rookie (essentially Liljegren), or some guy who routinely bounces between the NHL and AHL (which is all they can afford to sign)
If they prove me wrong and are able to upgrade the right side with a rightie with legit NHL experience that will be great, but I don’t see it happening as things stand. |

Fun fact: when the Queen would go on a royal tour of Canada, she would have a new pair of underwear every day.
Canadian taxpayers would pay for it.

Holl is a $2M RD on the last year of his contract. He does a moderately ok job when he’s paired with someone good and doesn’t try to do too much. He tends to play beyond himself when he’s with someone who’s not that dependable. Holl and good Muzzin were a good pairing and Holl did a decent job. Holl and bad Muzzin were ungood, as Holl tends to run around and play beyond himself.
There’s a reason he’s on the PK and out at the end of the game. - Canada Cup
Yup. And at the risk of repeating myself: Gio is not a defender who can raise Holl's game at this point.
Frankly, I don't even think Norris Gio would be able to do it. One could make a very good argument that Norris Gio was only Norris Gio because of Brodie's uncanny pairmanship(!). |

Not sure, maybe when they are +39 and on the top pairing of a team playing over 20 minutes a game. (second best was TJ Brodie at +29 among defenders) Just maybe.
In case there is a dispute about the legitimacy of +/-, top all time leaders are Larry Robinson, Bobby Orr and Ray Bourque. - winsix
They all had very lucky careers. It is incredible how they always stepped off the ice 2 seconds before a goal was scored against their team! |

We used to have a guy in my hockey team that would always change on the backcheck.
When the other teams cored he'd just say "Whew! Dodged a minus there!" |

What I find incredible about that record is that Orr with a 10 year career is 2nd on the list. Not to take anything away from Robinson who was the best d-man on an incredible run in the 70's, but Orr was on a different level. Dallas Smith had about as much talent as Sergio Momesso.
