Actually, other coaches who have either worked with or played under Tortorella have adopted similar approaches at the start of camp. Maybe not as many days or to the same degree, but they do pretty skating intensive stuff at the start.
It may only be a 1% or 2% edge over the average NHL team but it's doable.
Martin St. Louis started the Habs camp with the same skating drills he did under Torts. He also subscribes to the belief that camp should be more stress test than audition. Where he learned it: Torts. There have been several articles and tweets about it.
Sullivan has said he models camps largely -- though not entirely-- on things he gleaned from coaching mentor Tortorella. He tries to push the boundaries of players' comfort zones from the start.

I’m not excited for this season but I’ll watch every game. I’m a fan of the team. I’m a fan of hockey. Most importantly, there is a silver lining to everything. Calling this team the worst team in the entire league is lazy. This is why you play the games and even if they are in fact the worst team in the league, that’s fine. Speaking for myself, I want the best possible shot at the first overall pick. All of that aside, we have players who simply need to rebound and/or set up. Ivan Provorov and Travis Konency need to step up and rebound. Morgan Frost simply needs to step up. I think it’s reasonable to expect these players to reach another gear in their play. I think all three players are capable. I understand being town on this team right now and the way it’s being ran but all teams go through this. I think being garbage just might be the best thing to happen to the Flyers at this current point in time. How bad are they? Let’s wait and see.

Winning the Deslauriers sweepstakes is already paying dividends. When he is out there it is noticeable. No liberties are taken against the Flyers players and there is a whole heck of a lot more open ice for the dynamic offensive players on this team to demonstrate their abilities.
