So no Robertson? - The_Inkwell
Okposo used his NMC to call off the trade. Dallas wouldn’t accept anyone else in the deal so it’s over. |
|
|
|
I wonder if some of the hangup was the deal being 5 years or 4 years, as 5 years would walk him right to free agency, but 4 years means Dallas can at least trade his rights and get something in return if Robertson doesn't want to commit to Dallas long term. - kingcong39
These deals are basically a player option 5th year, with the inflated QO.
Also notable that the deal allows them to start the season without using LTIR.

People or just me? The point I was making was that I think olo, JJP, a protected 1st and whatever else isn’t enough trade power and if I was Dallas I would want something interesting in return. Just politely trying to make conversation with a fellow poster but in return I get attitude from the peanut gallery. - joshs
I am not blasting you, and you weren't the only one. And I agree about not getting it done. Point you can't say let's bet on one thing and hope it happens, while it's not alright to bet on another thing, especially if people are using the talent level on the Sabres to hopefully make a deal work. |

Yes, as it puts a lot of power in the players hands, but not all of it, as Dallas can still trade him after his contract is up, and hopefully get a better return then they would at the trade deadline of his 5th season if it were a 5 year deal, or worse, lose him for nothing as a UFA. |

My point to you was that I saw two different scenarios:
- Debrincat: trade away draft choices with no time to negotiate or at least have a fruitful conversation with the Agent to agree on a future contract. Then at years end you either pay him $9.3m for 1 year, then he's a UFA, able to walk for nothing. So possible result being an overpay.ent in Year 2 and losing him for nothing. Other possible result was to try trade when 31 other teams know you have zero leverage and can just wait until UFA.
- Robertson: work out a suitable trade with the Stars, but before consummating it; speak with Agent to negotiate a suitable Contract. They key here is if you don't like the Contract Terms, you walk away from the trade. Nothing lost, absolutely nothing.
Long term the Team still has all it's assets and not worrying about recovering them when they lost all leverage.
About the only thing similar in the whole trade/Contract scenario was the players themselves, that's it.

Hypothetical: Bills offer their 3rd round pick for Chase Claypool. Do you make that trade?
https://twitter.com/ThePo..._uC0pJSPp0ilEi0t7r6Q&s=19 - kingcong39
No, a 3rd is too high in my opinion
Granted the Bills should actually know how to use him and I have had a man crush on him since the Bowl Game in Orlando when he played for Notre Dame and he went crazy, but a 3rd round pick even at the end of the 3rd round is too much IMO.
His 9 TD season is looking more like an outlier more and more

I know what your point is and totally understand. My point is that people were willing to bet on the Sabres now, but not 3 months ago. Yes Debrincat was a huge risk, but you are betting on your talent pool getting a deal done either way. Yes you have more control with Robertson, but either way you are using your prospect pool and players you have on your roster to either get one to sign and stay long term or your using those picks and prospects to acquire Robertson |

5th at most.

Absolutely
He’s pretty talented and can play outside & the slot
A 3rd isn’t much for what he could give us
Or we could always go after OBJ |

Idk that we get him for less than a 3rd
He’s had pretty bad Qb play the last few years-
especially this year & last
With Josh throwing to him in our offense, i think he could be a stud
More talented than Gabe Davis imo
And he’s relatively cheap too
On his rookie contract still for this year & next |

Yeah brought that up earlier. Would cost 920,000 against the cap this year and 1.8m next year. |
