They have one player who can realistically be projected to score more than 20 goals. Kane. - Elbows15
And when he gets traded, you will definitely get more high draft picks for your rebuild. |

There are still 15 teams that are over the cap, obviously before LTIR, and paper transactions, but I still think KD making one more Richardinson type trade. |

So, recognizing the Hawks are in a tear down ( you have to tear it down before rebuilding), and played 4 rookies on defense, the BOD ( some):are freaking out about what probably will occur more times than not during the regular season.
Would those Nostradamus be any happier if the Hawks had basically the same team as last year and no first round picks? Do you think bringing in a veteran coach would of made last years team playoff worthy?
I really don’t care if they score only 75 goals next season. Who of the forwards are going to be on the team in 2 or 3 years? They are pawns to be sacrificed for the greater good hopefully in 5 years.
And I wouldn’t worry about Rocky’s pocketbook. Alchohol related companies do extremely well in bad economic times.
BTW, the Hawks one win was better than the Canadiens who went winless in the exhibition season. I can see Bedard wearing a Canadiens jersey as #1 next year. - LAHawk
If you are bringing logic to the board, careful, a year long ban may be awaiting you |

Waivers are tricky. Guys like Mike Reilly would make the Hawks better, but that’s not what they need right now. It may be worth taking a flyer on a youngish guy like Heponiemi or Borgstrom. |

It won't be a high pick. Kane will only waive for a Cup contender. It would be a pick in the 20's most likely. |

Timing. Able to draft a top four 'in '23. The players we draft in first round in both next two drafts replace Kane and Toews? Maybe one or two of those choice will become top NHL players. But I really am counting more upon kids developing and stepping up among the blueline crew. I realize it may seem practicly futile ....especially when the dmen aren't great right away. A bonus would be the two kids in net. Neither will play here much or at all, however, in '23.
The thing about the defensemen I should elaborate exactly what my hope is...A deep quality defence ....moves puck, skates well to above average, many have good size to either check or tie up/pin their man to the boards. A lot of offensive generation possible as most have descent to above average ability in certain aspects of their offensive game......uncertain if there is a true #1 dman prospect but up to six solid defenders can get the job done. Team chemistry and forwards helping out matters. The abundance of forward prototype KD has focused upon drafting can make the defense more competent than otside observers might guess is not so. |

The only possibility to get a higher pick for Kane is to obtain Dallas' 1st from the Rangers and hope the Stars miss the playoffs. Maybe get something in the 14-16 range in that case and hope the Stars don't win the lottery and move up since it's top 10 protected. |

I know we have contributors on the board that are in western Canada, has any seen Brandon Yaeger from Moose Jaw? Hockey News has him rated 4th.
And Wiz, what’s your thoughts on Yaeger? - LAHawk
Was looking through the rankings for next year's draft to see who in the WHL might be coming to Seattle this year. Here's a list of some top WHL guys (Wiz ranking at front):
1 Bedard, Connor C Regina
4 Yager, Brayden C Moose Jaw
7 Benson, Zach C Winnipeg
18 Danielson, Nate C Brandon
24 Lind, Kailan LW Red Deer
26 Price, Caden LD Kelowna
28 Cristall, Andrew LW Kelowna
34 Ziemmer, Koehn RW Prince George
40 Dragicevic, Lukas RD Tri-Cities
51 Heidt, Riley C Prince George
57 Molendyk, Tanner LD Saskatoon
63 Ratzlaff, Scott G Seattle
131 Sawchyn, Gracyn C Seattle
NR Dube, Brayden RW Seattle
Unfortunately the teams from the Prairies are not coming "south of the border" this year. Still a lot of prospects to see, in addition to Korchinski, Allan, and Dach.
Sawchyn is a smurfy scorer (leads Seattle in points right now) and will be interested to see if he moves up.
Would also be interested in Wiz's thoughts about Yager.

Drafting players is very much an odds game and quantity is helpful in that regard.
Even as high as the 3rd overall its less then 50/50 you'll get an excellent player. - fattybeef
That is totally untrue with this draft year...it is loaded. This isn't a 2000's draft....
2000 – Marian Gaborik (Right Winger, Minnesota Wild)
2001 – Alexandr Svitov (Center, Tampa Bay Lightning)
2002 – Jay Bouwmeester (Defenseman, Florida Panthers)
2003 – Nathan Horton (Right Winger, Florida Panthers)
2004 – Cam Barker – (Defenseman, Chicago Blackhawks)
2005 – Jack Johnson (Defenseman, Carolina Hurricanes)
2006 – Jonathan Toews (Center, Chicago Blackhawks)
2007 – Kyle Turris (Center, Pheonix Coyotes)
2008 – Zach Bogosian (Defenseman, Atlanta Thrashers)
2009 – Matt Duchene (Center, Colorado Avalanche)
Getting that 1 or 2 pick is pretty critical for next year and hopefully another high one the year after gives them a good couple of high end talents to build around. - fattybeef
When you are talking about the top player shooting the puck already at 17 as well as Mike Bossy, it is difficult to say not winning lottery is a disappointment.
Pushing that argument to picking at slot two doesn't work for me right now, epecially if you are looking at it like the Russian kid gets by-passed and Fantilli is who you have slotted at number two. I love his size, but his game in college would have to be overwhelming superior to his Chicago Steel efforts to place him as an even with Bedard. I am not saying that in July, we see him as closer to Bedard, but that hasn't happened.
I just don't see this as a two player or three player horse race, as there are over a DOZEN superior talents at the top, and quite frankly all those names drafted from 2000-2009 are from a different era of youngster preparation, than the current ways prospects now make themselves "attractive" to play the new game. Everything from handling and skating besides shooting is so advanced and less hit and muss.
I will agree when look at the current rosters of the league winning teams you can be assured they are littered with first round picks.
As much as I will be bummed out if the hawks don't win Connor Bedard, I take solace in the fact there are lots more cannot misss kids in this draft class, and that six picks two in every round mean JD's scouting staff need to hit on the right ones, but less chance on missing in the to four selections this year than the the thin years of draft's past. |

I just saw that Alex Turcotte just started skating again, about a week ago, after being concussed in May.
Gotta feel for the kid. He never has had the chance to ever really get going. Always injured in some way, shape, or form. |
