I see both sides of the coin
he could become that physical shut down d man
or he could become a blah bottom pair d man
today we have no choice but to trust the process
I figured cozens would have been the one they invested in - homiedclown
Cozens would have to sign the dotted line.... My guess is he want to bet on himself since he knows he can put the biscuit in the basket

There was zero need to do this.
Where was Mattias Samuelsson going? Horrible cap and asset management.
If people on this board are going to tell me Tage Thompson & Mattias Samuelsson are good contracts, they haven't been Watchung hockey long enough. 11.4 million for the next 7 years.
They better pray they work out. Already stuck with Skinner, you have these two offseason contracts, and something tells me they are about to give too much money to Cozens. We will be paying Girgensons 2.0 5.5 million plus for the 30 some points. - Mentalorgasm5
Taking that approach also led to the Reinhart, McCabe and Ullmark situations. It could also bite the Sabres with Dahlin.
There is a risk to playing it either way |

Not really. Extending them to multiple 1 and 2 year contracts did that
Not sure why we are ignoring the obvious middle ground. One bridge deal, extend long term after that.
People on the board pretending like they know a 2nd round pick who has played in 54 games is gonna be worth 30 million over the next 7 years. Most GMs/scouts/presidents in the NHL making millions wouldnt make such bold claims.
Yesterday they gave themselves an unneeded risk. |

Mmmm no. The sabres decided to give the contract now. After 54 games. Not after 82.
Thats the whole point. You need a longer body of work to hand out 7 year guaranteed contracts. |

I think the only other drafted player to get paid like this in the history of the nhl w/o playing a full season was Kaprizov |

And if he performs well, then you pay him more and into his 30s, rather than buying all of his 20s now. It's a risk, yeah, but that bridging alternative is as well. The latter is just risk disguised as patience |

And he had just a slightly different start to his career.
This move is unprecedented, and not in a good way. |

Cozens would get around that 4 mill mark or less with a bridge, or could wait to the end of the year and get more with term(if successful).
These kids want the bag, they post their teammates and congratulate them, they want it themselves.
Tage and Mats both got great Money and commitment. Cozens would not get that right now.

so there is that |

Come on, what is a defensive dman gonna do in the next 1 or 2 years that will raise his cap beyond what he just got paid? There isn't a justification for this. He wasn't going anywhere, and due to his role and skill set, he was only going to get paid so much. |

he could have thrown 6 to 6.5 mil and gamble on futures like the jets did with Scheifele
I mean it's not as outlandish as drafting a goalie in the 2nd round of the 2022 draft

There's talk out there that Cozens is the next one that is going to sign long term, and Sabres management is working on that now. |

You're the only poster that feels this way.
Tells you something.
Actually it should tell you something, you're in the minority and wrong.
Anyone else not like the samuelsson signing? |

Both Toews and Samuelsson signed a deal that is a little over 5% of the cap limit.
You bridge him for 2 years, than sign to him to the same 5% of the cap limit deal when the cap limit goes from $82M to $88M, and his salary until he is 32 or 33 goes from $4.3M per to $4.6M per, plus you're now paying him through his early 30's.
If he ends up becoming a top pairing Dman, you can forgot the 5% of the cap hope. |

Their justification is that they think they locked down a top-4 D man through 2030 at $4.28m
If they're right, it's a bargain
It's a risk, no doubt, but it's a hell of a payoff if they're right. Top 4 dmen will make a lot more than that in 2028 |

Two things.
One, he and Dahlin could form a true top pairing. If that happens, his pay would definitely go up.
More importantly, two, the cap limit will rise, and notably so in 2 seasons, which means his pay will rise because contracts are often based on comparable deals in terms of percentage of the cap limit at the time the deals were signed. |
