Their justification is that they think they locked down a top-4 D man through 2030 at $4.28m
If they're right, it's a bargain
It's a risk, no doubt, but it's a hell of a payoff if they're right. Top 4 dmen will make a lot more than that in 2028 - Hank Balling
Top 4 defensemen will make more than that as soon as in 2 seasons, if the expected cap limit rise to $88M happens. |

And if he performs well, then you pay him more and into his 30s, rather than buying all of his 20s now. It's a risk, yeah, but that bridging alternative is as well. The latter is just risk disguised as patience - Hank Balling
My only confusion with this is I really don’t think you pay much more after a good season this year.
He’s not an offensive guy. Shut down D men with one good year don’t cost a ton |

Dude come on.
A 2nd round pick that has only played 54 games, you don't hand him 30 million guaranteed. It's unprecedented, and extremely reckless.

Newsflash it wasn't a good move. - Mentalorgasm5
It was a “risky” move
But we have no idea if it was a good move or not yet
We’ll have to wait & see how this all plays out |

The scoring is ridiculous, their defense is the best they have had since the 1900s, their goaltending should be good enough. I believe in Samsonov over Murray, but one of the two should shine and if everyone can stay healthy this team will see beyond the first round of the playoffs for sure…. |

You do when the cap limit is $88M in 2 seasons, or $92M in three seasons. |

You're the only poster that feels this way.
Tells you something.
Actually it should tell you something, you're in the minority and wrong.
Anyone else not like the samuelsson signing? - Boss34
Okay, you're asking a question to a fanbase that will be bias. Go ask any other team. Gives you a better sense of reality. |

Two things.
One, he and Dahlin could form a true top pairing. If that happens, his pay would definitely go up.
More importantly, two, the cap limit will rise, and notably so in 2 seasons, which means his pay will rise because contracts are often based on comparable deals in terms of percentage of the cap limit at the time the deals were signed. - kingcong39
1) dahlin should be so great it really shouldn't matter whi his partner is.
2) hoping the cap will greatly increase isn't justification to make bad moves. |

Saying it shouldn't matter who is Dahlin's partner and having a player who is part of a top pair defense tandem who needs a new contract are two things that don't go together (fantasy vs. reality).
Hope? The NHL shared with teams where they expect the cap limit to be for each of the upcoming 3 seasons weeks ago with teams, so teams could have an idea for planning purposes.
This is what they shared:
22-23 $82.5M
23-24 $83.5M
24-25 $87.5-$88M
25-26 $92M |

JFC, 4.28 million for a top 4 D-man in the NHL is a franking bargin. Even if he stays on the pace of 20pts a year and keeps his +/- in the single digits playing 16-20 mins a night its a TOTAL W...
I see really ZERO risk in this signing only upside.
I predict 3 goals, 20 assist, -5, averaging 18 mins a night.
Totally worth 4.28 Million for 7 years
PPL get your heads outcha butts. This is a great thing. |

Every contract signed is speculation on both sides. It need not be more complicated than that. Adams is gambling that the kid will be everything that we hope he will be. He could have waited longer and lessened the risk but also increased the likelihood of paying more later. I personally like it and would advocate doing it for all of the kids that we think are the future. As others have pointed out, in the worst case scenario (he stinks) it is much easier to move on from someone under 26. |
