The Philadelphia Flyers announced the club has signed defenseman Travis Sanheim to an eight-year, $50 million contract extension ($6.25 million AAV), according to President of Hockey Operations & General Manager, Chuck Fletcher.
"We're extremely happy to have Travis under long-term contract and see him as a key piece of our team's future," said Fletcher. "Travis has improved each season to become a highly reliable player and key contributor on our blueline. Furthermore, he is someone who has developed his entire career with us and has grown into a valuable leader for our team."
"Obviously, I'm really excited. It's a huge day not only for me, but for my family and friends as well," said Sanheim. "To be drafted not only by Philly, but in Philly, and now to sign a long-term deal here, it means a lot. I love this city, love the fan base and I'm excited to turn this around and get things going. There's no better place to win than Philly."
Sanheim, 26 (3/29/96), recorded 31 points (7-24=31), 34 penalty minutes (PIM), 123 shots and 142 blocked shots in 80 games during the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-4, 208-pound native of Elkhorn, Manitoba, led the Flyers with a plus-9 rating, ranked second in average time on ice (22:58) and blocked shots, third in even-strength points (31) and T-3rd in assists. He led team defensemen in assists, ranked T-1st in points and second in goals and shots. He set career highs in plus/minus rating, PIM and shots on goal. The left-shot blueliner recorded a season-high four-game point streak (2-3=5), Dec. 14-29, 2021, netted his third career overtime goal on Jan. 31 at Boston to become the fifth defenseman in Flyers history to own three-plus overtime goals, and skated in his 300th NHL game on Feb. 12 at Detroit. |

Seeing that Tampa and Florida imo need a top 4 dman. I thought Sanheim may be a good fit for them via trade. Though not sure what they have to give back in return. All moot now. |

How many cap ⚓️ 8 years deals do flyers have? And how much will they stall the team when these players goes from bad to horrible. Flyers stuck in a everlasting mud. |

Is Provy gone? Surely paying 5 dmen over 5 million is not the plan. I know Ellis will probably be stuck on LTIR, but still. |

Well the next GM should have a pretty easy job seeing as how everyone is signed to long term contracts, most of which the Flyers are already underwater on.
Good for Sanheim but I still wonder how a team this bad defensively can have 5 defensemen making 5+ million.

Cracks me up why they continue to double down going forward with this group and the long term deals. Very misguided to me

Exactly. It’s not working. So let’s resign everyone and spend what money we do have on terrible depth signings.
I’m not joking. You could pick any person off Broad Street and they’d run this franchise better. |

To bring back the same guys on D ( Ivan, Sanheim, Braun, Risto, Seeler) and add Tony D is well, I am not sure what it is. |

This is a good deal. Sanheim is a high quality 2nd pairing Dman that will play 20+ mins a game. Every team can use a player like TS |

No issue with the deal itself. Deal is fine. More of the same is the problem. This group will never ever win a damn thing.
A contender would love him for a few months and playoffs.

Certainly but how many mediocre long term high cap hit players can you have ? They should move Provy |
