No, it’s not really Covid. I’m into enough stores and things every day that likely provide all the exposure. It’s really just a crowd thing. - Canada Cup

Things to discuss for Sunday morning:
- Campbell pooped the bed last night
- Ian Cole investigation concludes “there ain’t poop here”
- Leafs goaltending - Atomic Wedgie
1. I didn't like his posture when leaving the ice. Campbell doesn't have that defiance or rage you like to see from a goalie who's had a bad game. I told my friend (the Oiler fan) that, and he said I didn't know what I was talking about. I mean . . .we just saw it for 2 years - but if you say anything negative about an Oiler, he thinks you're bashing the team. Some of their fans are very sensitive.
2. I think CC may have been right about this one. I think they played it well enough, kept it insulated, did the proper due diligence, didn't make the suspension a "thing", and their conclusion that Ian Cole didn't do anything provably wrong should allow him to move forward with little to no damage to his reputation. I think if the story became bigger or dragged out longer, it would have run that risk.
3. None of us liked getting Matt Murray. It was just as dumb now that he's hurt as it was the day he was acquired. I literally have said that if he steps up and proves his worth in the playoffs, the deal was worth it - but I have little faith in him being anything more than a slightly below average goalie. Samsonov entered the league with expectations of being in the same conversation as Vasilevskiy and Shesterkin, so you know he has talent to gamble on at least. In the limited sample of two games so far, he has been good.
We can't acquire anyone else without moving someone out, so Kallgren is going to be the backup for October and a couple of weeks of November at least, if not longer. I'd still see if there's a 21/22/23 year old in another organization who may be promising enough, but 4th in their depth chart - and see if a deal can be made.

Probably just crotchety old man syndrome. I’m not just not up to the hassle of getting into town, etc, etc |

1. Can’t even really blame the defence.
2. Investigation was asking person to come forward. Nobody came forward.
3. So far, one if the two is looking good. Inconclusive on the other - Canada Cup
They also interviewed NHL personnel - following in the wake of the Kyle Beach scandal, or the Hockey Canada scandals - anyone with actual knowledge of such an event would be wise to come forward now rather than be caught lying later - and their agents would very likely have advised them as such.

Hyman is a good deal - that we couldn't afford in both AAV and term. The Oilers organization may regret the last two years of the deal, but they aren't playing for then.
Campbell was going to make $5m; it was in the tea leaves of all the other deals out there. It's still too much for what he's going to bring to the table, but not too much in terms of what he had earned by his comparables. We won't miss him.
Nurse is probably $2m overpaid. His career best in points is about a 53 point proration - a number which $7.5m Morgan Rielly has surpassed 3 times. Chicago made a panic move and signed Seth Jones to a ridiculous deal that set the bar for a number of deals to follow immediately after: Makar, Hamilton, Werenski, Nurse, Hughes, McAvoy and Fox. In the wake of those super signings, Rielly took $7.5m. But with the exception of Jones, Nurse does not belong in the company of those other $9m D-men.
Barrie @ $4.5 . . . he did sign it after completing his best season with what would have been a 70pt season. He tested the market, though and wasn't getting what he wanted, so this was the best deal he could find I'd assume.
Ceci is just inexplicable. He scored a beauty of a goal yesterday - but there is just nothing in his game that justifies that salary for 4 years. I mean Pittsburgh singed him for $1.25 after he left here - and he was basically his standard 25pt self with occasional brain farts playing against middle-of-the-pack competition. Wait. Did I just describe $2m Justin Holl, or $3.25m Cody Ceci? - Monkeypunk
Hyman's 7 year deal at age 29 is a slight overpay on $ and a huge overpay on term. His style and injury history make that deal questionable IMO.
Campbell is an overpay, mostly because of term. He could have got $4.5 to $5 on a two year deal elsewhere. His career path to this point hardly justify $5M x 5
Nurse is a terrible deal, several better defenders around in the $5M range.
Ceci and Barrie - most teams have better minimum wage defenders. Holl is way better than Ceci IMO. Leafs saw Barrie's value when he played in TO, he's a ghost in his own zone.

What role are you looking to trade for, better backup than Kallgren while Murray is in LTIR?

Murray most likely not coming back anytime soon boys
the adductor injury if slight is minimum of 4 weeks, if bad it's 3-4 months min.
Samsonov will be good, but we can't overuse him & the backup situation is far,
far from ideal. Someone posted yesterday that Dubas get on the phone now...
Stolarz from ANA, Stalock from CHI, Korpisalo from CLMB, Nedjelkovic
from DET, Reimer or Kahkonen from SJ, Jones from SEA, Greiss from STL,
Thompson, Brossoit, or Hill from VEG are most of the decent options for
early season trades.
They need to acquire one of the backups asap - Murray likely going to LTIR
so Leafs will have plenty of cap space all of sudden - Dubas' plan all along = BRILLIANT |

Leafs are good enough to win with Kallgren in net. They showed it last year plenty of times. No reason to make a knee jerk reaction today.

There really isn’t plenty of cap space. Lilligren is coming back. Benn’s money needs to be accommodated and Murray isn’t dead.

All Good, but Murray is injured, not retiring. Leafs already above cap when Murray returns, so any trade for a goalie would have to be about a million or less. The plenty of cap space is only while the player is on LTIR.

Tough spot to be in for this team. A steep price to pay for two years of playoff Murray if this is what to expect in the regular season. Who knows if playoff Murray is even a thing... it's been so long since he's been there. Hopefully Samsonov can hold the fort, a golden opportunity to turn his narrative around. |

Not really, they have a capable young goalie with .926 Sv% so far and a league minimum guy with NHL experience. Goatending not an issue at this point. In any event, Leafs not in a tough spot. The Leafs did not play particularly well yesterday but thanks to a late goal by Holl, we don't have to listen to Spatso's baloney today.

I hope so. Terrible Precident
Imagine a burner account makes an accusation against MAtthews, McDavid, heck, anyone on the eve of the playoffs, or SCF
Should the league immediately suspend pending an investigation?

Agree if it is an actual credible report by a person coming forward then do what you need to do.. But to take action based on a newly created anonymous twitter post is crazy.
There is nothing to stop a crazy fan from coming forward and accusing a high profile player of something during the playoffs either at this point.. There are no repercussions for making a false claim.

Barrie gets paid and has always gotten paid for his offensive value. In 129 games with the oilers he's a +7 (for those who care about that stat) and has 89pts....69ppg. That is why he gets paid 4.5m.
But yes defensively, he aint that good. |

What occurred last year doesnt mean it will repeat this year. Theyre suppose to a "cup contender" (lol too funny) and their goaltending for years has been a question and continues to be.
Its 1 week into the season. |

Its a concern for sure. We cant overplay sammie and our often injured 4.6m goalie is ......yup, injured after only playing horribly in his only game. |
