Yours is such a dumb analogy because it's highly individualized. Here:
Another child says they want a blue cup, you tell them they are getting the green cup and when you give them the blue cup anyways they are happy about it because that's what they wanted.
On top of that, your analogy doesn't even line up with what we're talking about – the fans didn't ask for a blue cup (winning team), they were first told about the winning team. Maybe this will make it easier for you:
Someone is told then will get X, then they receive Y, then they are disappointed because they expected X.
The fans don't want a losing team, they want a rebuild. Yes, rebuild entails losing, but losing doesn't necessarily equate to rebuilding (see: overpriced contracts, trading away draft capital, large UFA signings, etc.) - NewYorkNuck
You are saying it in the bold.
To the rest, it's all apart of hockey. What team has never signed a free agent or never made a trade.
The main principal of a rebuild is to get a high draft pick to potentially get a good young player. Anything else is a part of hockey and doesn't mean you aren't rebuilding. The Rangers one year after saying they are rebuilding, Panarin. Trade for Adam Fox. Trade for Trouba.
The simple fact is Benning put the team through a rebuild, the team finished low. Intentionally or not.
Rutherford said rebuilds don't always work out. Benning's clearly didn't work but the expectations of the fans is that if you do a "proper" rebuild it will work. Expectation vs reality.
the only thing she did differently from what I said was put in a way that a child would understand because that's what she does, therapy for children. - manvanfan

Benning accidentally did a rebuild while trying to compete. He failed twice, and that is what fans are angry about. And we have every right to be.

I am not sure I would even call it an accidental rebuild, as he was still trading picks, and still signing stopgap free-agents, as well.
All his high picks were definitely by accident, but I wouldn't call that rebuilding, that is shuffling deck-chairs.

A lot of this has to do with coaching, last season when Boudreau took over it was a breath of fresh air for the players, they responded, but that’s obviously worn off. The Canucks have allowed 30 goals against, they don’t play with much structure defensively as five-man units.
It doesn’t help that the defence is terrible as well. Their turnovers are amateur level. Add on top of that, that there seems to always be a culture issue within the organization that started with the Linden/Benning era. Organizational culture is something you build over time within the locker room, I can speak from experience there.
The Canucks don’t really have a core of players to speak of, they have some nice young players but not a core group of players in my opinion. When you’re continuously slapping poop against the wall to see what sticks and you have a high turnover within the locker room you can’t build a culture.
The only way to truly fix this is from the top down! - Pacificgem
Aquilini is the start yes but we do have a very manageable 'core' here. Miller Horvat Petey, Boeser Hughes Demko...Most teams would kill to have those quality players. You look at the intangibles and build it all in. Something this club has not been able to achieve as of yet. The D needed addressing and we went out and got two wingers. Yes the sky is falling blah blah blah but having three 30 goal players on the roster last season is nothing to sneeze at. We have some pieces just need to fit it all together.
But I agree on the culture angle. Had a decent mix last year but let Motte Highmore Lammiko all walk in favour of Lazar Joshua Aman. Weird. Plus you add Kuzmenko and Mikheyev who haven't gelled in yet you have a bad mix of any type of chemistry right now trying to fit 5 new forwards into a system that was already established last year with different players. Another reason why Boudreau is struggling with the lines.
Excuses yes but the injured D Myers Dermott etc have had major impact on minutes played. Now Hughes a 60-70 point man is out for what? The mosh pit? lol
Combine it all you have issues. Yes we know blah blah Ownership on down but man we have to have some kind of faith these players can right the ship no? Or is the culture just damaged too much mentally and physically to repair it all?
Plus Demko has looked slow and off kilter. More combinations to the slide. Yes he is not getting great help from basically an AHL defence but man steal a few games and let's see if we can get back on track. Perfect opportunity to close the door vs Carolina when Miller ties it on the PP but no sir lol...can't get a timely stop. Is he world class or not?
Hilarious too how the media went from singing the praises of Boudreau and the Canucks last year to what it is now. Some flip flops going on lol
Mentally this club is way too fragile right now. Need a few things to go their way but at the same time they have to manufacture it themselves as well. Score some goals, make a few (frank)ing saves and lets go!!

Nick Kypreos
I'm sorry, but, you can't talk rebuild, when you just signed an almost 30 year-old JT Miller to an 8 million per for 7 years.
😄😄
Not a big fan of Kypreos, but he isn't wrong.
This team has been put in a bigger mess, because of the recent off-season from this management team. - Reubenkincade
Hilarious but rewind last year when the club was clipping along at a .668 win % and the media is like lock JT Miller up long term!!
Benning accidentally did a rebuild while trying to compete. He failed twice, and that is what fans are angry about. And we have every right to be. - Retinalz
I wouldn’t call it a rebuild at all, what Benning did. Minivan is having a hard time differentiating between losing and rebuilding. They can absolutely be mutually exclusive!
In 2015/16 Jim Benning did not under an pretences attempt to finish third last in the entire league. He traded away a kid he took in the first round two years earlier and a 2nd round pick for a defenceman so he could be competitive. He was just plain and simply an incompetent General Manager.
Rebuilding entails a different mindset, you acquire picks, you don’t trade them away. You don’t finish third last and have two picks in the first four rounds. You leverage your salary cap space, you don’t spend to the max, you spend to the floor.
Losing is only a part of purposeful rebuilding, there’s so much more that goes into it, at least in my opinion.

The point isn't whether he meant to or not. It's the fact that it happened. Jim Rutherford the other day said that they might well be in a rebuild. Did the summer seem like they were in a rebuild? Didn't seem like that. Probably what he said he to do with the team losing.
You should also tell the Rangers GM that he didn't do a rebuild correctly after he wrote a letter saying they were going to rebuild.
