It was pretty cool to see actually and something that in a lot of instances should have happened a long time ago.
So many examples over the years where a player wore a now retired # well after the player or players who made it famous were gone from the game etc.
I mean did it make sense that all these players were able to wear the #27 as a Leaf?
Kenny Girard 1957-1960
Mike Nykoluk 1957
Frank Mahovlich 1958-1968
Gerry Meehan 1969
Gordie Nelson 1970
Darryl Sittler 1971-1982
Miroslav Ihnacak 1986-1987
Dave Semenko 1988
John Kordic 1989-1991
Lucien DeBlois 1991-1992
Shayne Corson 2001-2003
Bryan Marchment 2004
Michael Peca 2007
And you can do that with almost every retired #.
I like having that many #'s retried personally. - Cush29
I don't hate jersey retirement, but I think it's overblown and frequently unnecessary or just a PR/Marketing stunt. Chris Neil does not deserve to have a retired jersey. The list of Leafs with retired jerseys is excessive. I can get behind most of those (Broda/Bower, Kelly, Barilko, Bailey, Clancy, Conacher, Armstrong, Mahovolich, Keon . . . ) because they were legends who led this team to years of success.
I love Gilmour, Clark, Sundin, Salming . . . and maybe Salming deserves great recognition for being the Swedish pioneer in this league and literally paving the road for others to follow - but sincerely Clark, Gilmour and Sundin didn't win anything here. They didn't lead a team to years to sustainability either. Displaying moments of greatness without consistency probably doesn't deserve a retired jersey.
It's like the Raptors retiring Leonard's jersey for one banner - or if Colorado retired Bourque's number (which, by the way, they did) for the year they won the cup with him.

I see your point with the Gilmour, Clark #’s and kinda agree but Sundin is a HOF player and I don’t think jersey retirement has to be solely linked to winning - players can’t control who they play with / how good or bad the team they are on are.
Salming I also feel should be retired for the points you raised and he is an example of a player who was unbelievable and surrounded for a lot of his career with m’eh players and a crappy team. Thanks Ballard.

The odd thing, it was not a modern looking jersey, nor was it so old looking that it would be from back then.
It was as if, 25 years ago, someone bought an old-school player jersey from way before that. - Aetherial
Ya thats weird.
I did see a Matthews jersey with high quality letters and #s stitched onto it but the jersey looked like a $29 Giant Tiger jersey. The stitching and name/ #’s was worth more than the jersey it was on. That was weird. Maybe the person wearing it owns a shop or knows someone who does the lettering I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why the jersey looked so off for a good 5 minutes stared at it while in line for a beer. Animals definitely requires multiple listens to really be appreciated. It went from one of my least listened to albums to maybe the most. Having said that, my Floyd listening trends tend to go through cycles.
The Division Bell is ostensibly a Floyd album but, I dare say, is actually a Gilmour/Wright project (no disrespect to Nick intended, but he's not a creative force). I enjoy it but it just doesn't quite match the albums with Waters. It's funny because I vacillate between TDB and AMLOR per which album I actually prefer - they both have some great tracks mixed in with some filler.
As per the most underrated album in Floyd's discography, IMHO it's gotta be Obscured by Clouds.
"Childhood's End" is (frank)ing epic:

Yeah love that video too.
I find that Gilmour is just not as good of a writer as Waters. There is no getting around that. I can appreciate his talents anyway, and he is my fave guitar player. I find some of the stuff on TDB reminded me a little of U2, and even Simple Minds in a couple areas.
WYWH just came on. Damn, I never get sick of that song.

Clearly it is long overdue for Probert's jersey to be retired in Detroit.
So someone mentioned the blues are ripe for a trade. What do you think happens? I am not saying they won't but I find it hard they would move a core player like Parayko or Faulk this season with such long contracts.
Maybe Tarasenko, O'Reilly or Saad. I don't really want them as rentals though. O'Reilly would be solid add but I think the cost would be too high for these guys, outside of Saad that I don't really want.

If the Leafs are looking for a playoffs performer, Tarasenko would be an amazing addition.

If the Leafs had real leadership and not Ballard/Imlach, they might have been able to turn that core into something that could have competed with the big dogs of the day (Montreal/Islanders) - but it was one misstep after another.
Trade away Boutette, who would go on to have decent success in Hartford and Pittsburgh, for Bob Stephenson and his 14 career Leaf games and 2 goals.
Trade away MacDonald and Quenneville for Paiement and Pat Hickey. Paiement was an excellent player, but he was a bit of a malcontent, and was ultimately dealt for - Miroslav Frycer. So that's the law of diminishing returns right there.
The list went on - Williams and Butler out for Derlago and Vaive. McKechnie was dumped for a 3rd. Palmateer was dished out for a Robert Picard and a 2nd (Bob McGill) - and I guess it had potential, except they turned Picard into Bunny Laroque who was not a good goalie (in fact after the Leafs acquired him, he would play 81 more NHL games, and win 16 of them).
This destruction without a rebuild or a plan all culminates in moving out Sittler for Rich Costello and his career 2 goals in his career 12 games and Peter Ihnacak.
The wonton damage by that pair of geriatric maniacs is well documented, but the pain to a fanbase that was around to experience still resonates today.

I don't see a deal happening between the two clubs.
but Ek says something is brewing and hopefully it's not a coaching change.

I think you're right.
I do see them trading away the likes of Tarasenko at the deadline. They have a lot of guys signed into their late 20s for a number of years. I don't see why they would think they would sell off major parts and re-build type of deal. I could see O'Reilly resigned as well.

I had a "Farcebook memory" pop up this am from 2017.
It's a picture of Wendel Clark and I at the pre tourney draft party from an Easter Seals Charity Hockey tournament I played in. Our team actually drafted Rick Vaive and it was amazing such a nice guy.
Anyhow the narrative to go with my pic of Wendel and I was this:
Clark asked what position I played and when I said I was a goalie he replied “well if we play you in this tournament best advice I can give you if I ‘m shooting is to get outta the way or get hurt”! 😂🤣😂🤣
