Why can't they swap Cates and Frost? Frustrating

Just thinking the same thing.

Put another way, maybe Torts doesn’t see them as part of the group moving forward.

Maybe but then I would ask how does he know?

It was interesting to me that from the very beginning Torts was mentioning Hayes by name. (paraphrasing) If Kevin Hayes lays down and blocks a shot that kind of thing rallies a team.....

It seemed to me that Torts was firing a shot across his bow from the very beginning. My interpretation was that he knows Hayes is a divisive guy in the locker room and his presence and personality divides locker rooms into his side and their side. Again just my opinion, but I think Hayes created his side of the locker room against Giroux and this split the team. I wont go as far as to say Hayes is a cancer, but I do think he marches to his own beat and does his best to get other players to march with him.

Hayes is about the name on his back more than the crest on his jersey. I thought that when it was reported that he said the Flyers will really have to overpay for him to play here.

Torts knew all about this. Hence his preseason statement directly naming Hayes.

Don't most players want to be over paid? I can think of only a few who have taken less money to optimize the chances of the team.

Is Sanheim overpaid? I think so.

Yeah, possibly. IMO Hayes has the most untradeable contract on the team. Definitely in the top 3. I doubt he is going anywhere even with half retained. And I don't think Fletcher agrees with me anyway, nor Torts.
- MBFlyerfan
Half retained he has a lot of value imo. 3.5 for what he brings is a very very solid bargain. Now the GM imo has no interest in moving him more than likely.

Couturier, Risto, Ellis top 3. To me anyway.

If someone offered him something worthwhile for them he would move them.

The thing of interest to me is did Fletcher consult with Torts before claiming Bellows?

Neither player has earned it. Until they do, more of the same.

...and it's a double edged sword/ They play a responsible 2 way game and he dings them for not being able to force their imprint on the game and find offense. They take the chance necessary to manufacture offense with sub optimal line mates and it results in turn overs or the puck quickly going the other way because the line mates aren't capable to anticipate or get to the right spot and he tags them for being reckless or sloppy. Disaster situation for both

Agreed although my initial response was sarcasm.

I was aware but it seems he really must think he can force these kids to thread the needle or he's taking their career down with him.

Sure, but it isn't often you hear a player say a team would have to vastly OVERPAY for them to play there.

He's adamant in trying to make Cates into a 2 way center. Instead of just playing him in the spot and role that he has had success in. Tortorella refuses to play Cates/Frost/Tippet.

It's horrible development.

He's old school and archaic. Fits right in with the Flyers. From his systems, to his line choices, to his rhetoric.

Yep, right there with the telling a 17 or 18 year old that "we see you as a 3rd or 4th liner" and then being surprised they never offensively develop. You get what you ask for and expect.

Players don’t usually come out and say it but their actions speak it in negotiations. It happens to teams like Minnesota, Edmonton and Winnipeg. The Wild gave $9 mil to Kaprizov based on a small sample size and Edmonton overpaid with 9 mil to Nurse.

See, I keep hearing all this stuff but I’m not from Philadelphia, so while I can believe this is untrue, comments like these always resurface among fans and the media years after they leave.

I was hell-bent against signing Kevin Hayes when it was just a rumor. Then Chuck Fletcher traded for his rights, and that’s when I heard the rumor that the Flyers would have to overpay to sign him. That turned me off to him even more. I don’t care how nice a guy he might be or a jokster, he’s never been the right fit. He’s hasn’t put us over the top. He’s not helping the Flyers the same way the other big name free agents have helped their teams from that same summer.

Bill used to put the TV and radio coverage in his first paragraph of the game day blogs. I've noticed recently that he's not doing that much any longer.

It’s clear as day the Flyers should trade Frost. The organization isn’t going to change. They’ve showed us this numerous times.

Do right by the kid and unload him.
