7. A couple of analytics gurus said Ilya Sorokin’s shutout of Edmonton on Wednesday was as good as it gets. Depending on who you ask, the Oilers should have had scored around five goals on the New York Islanders that night

He’s a whole other level. Varlamov has been great also, for the most part, but Sorokin is ridiculous.

He has a good shot this year. Boston isn’t going to be playing at this level all season and I’m not sold on Ullmark. Georgiev? Nah. Sorokin in all honesty is doing this in front of a team that leaves him hung out to dry a lot of the time. The guy is fantastic.

Why does Beauvillier have such a long leash? It’s blind faith at this point. — William S.

Well, keep in mind that Beauvillier was scratched for a game on Oct. 23 at Florida. There have been games where his ice time has been reduced, too, like when he played less than 13 minutes in the comeback win against the Avalanche on Oct. 29 and the loss in Dallas on Saturday.

Regardless, there just aren’t any other options. Nikita Soshnikov had an opportunity to push a guy like Beauvillier out of the lineup and wasn’t able to do it. Ross Johnston isn’t suited for top-nine duty. There’s probably no one in the system that is ready to come up, either. It’s for all of these reasons that the expectation was for the Islanders to try and upgrade at forward in the offseason, and it’s why a guy like Beauvillier is still as logical a choice as any to get moved if the team needs to create some salary cap space for a bigger name.

My primary issue with Beauvillier’s game is he doesn’t seem to be able to get to the front of the net or put himself in good positions to score. According to Natural Stat Trick, he has just seven individual high-danger scoring chances, which is three fewer than fourth-liners Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck. You’re not going to score goals in this league unless you go to the net.

They've had other good goalies since then, but not a franchise guy like Sorokin. He is worth the wait he put us through.

Have they ever had a franchise goalie? Luongo could have been that guy but we traded him to draft rickety dipietro

Osgood was one of the better ones. Chico Resch obviously. Felix Potvin.

Sorokin is the best goalie to ever wear the jersey. His career is young I get it but his talent level and execution of said talent is something I’ve only seen with a few goalies in my life.

It was before my time but you wouldn't consider Smith to be a franchise goalie?

I always thought Richter to be overrated. He was an excellent goalie but I attribute a lot of that to the team in front of him.

Sure, at the time he was for us. But speaking from just an comparison stand point with all due respect to Smith there’s no comparison. Especially when factoring in the talent level difference between the 80’s and today. The league, overall, is immensely more talented today. Especially in a parity sense.

Richter had a good run and he was lights out in the playoffs. Those playoff series in 93’/94’ were all some of the best series I’ve ever seen. In both conferences.

Edit; of course disregarding our teams performance

The way Ownership was back then, he would of been traded at some point. Same with Chara. It was just a bad time to be an islander back then.

100%. We traded some high end drafted and home grown players and replaced them with picks. Most of which never amounted to anything. At least with us.

Luongo with Chara and they could have drafted Healy or Spezza instead we got yashin and dp. Yashin was maddening as he had tons of talent but not work ethic

The bust that Milbury said would be the next Patrick Roy. I hate Milbury so much. I'm glad he is off the broadcasts. I would have to mute the TV when he came on.
