The Islanders are proving that they have the ability to contend with anyone as long as they play their game.
Games Left against teams ahead of them in the east.
Bos - 2; Canes - 2; Leafs - 2; Devs -1; Tampa - 2; Caps - 5; Pitt - 2;
Total:16

Rags - 0; Wings - 2; Sabers 3; Cats - 0; Sens - 2; Habs - 2; Flyers - 2; CBJ - 1

They clearly need a top 6 dmen and depending on Pelech's status they may a top 4 dmen also. They also need a top 3 scorer. Maybe a backup goalie as well.
Does Horvat answer the needs? I stay away from Chychrun unless he falls in your lap.
I like VLADISLAV GAVRIKOV from CBJ. Could be had for prospects/ picks bc he is a ufa. Could easily be top 4 and or be a solid 5/6.
I like TIMO MEIER from SJS. |

I was a Fasching doubter. Looked at him as an injury fill in journeyman kind of player. He has taken this opportunity and run with it. The guy has been great on that third line. |

#Isles Injury Updates: Simon Holmstrom is day to day with a lower body injury and has been placed on IR (retroactive to 12/23/22). Oliver Wahlstrom is out indefinitely with a lower body injury and has been placed on IR (retroactive to 12/27/22).

He's been real solid. He'll never be a star but he looks like he does a lot of little things right and can have a future as a bottom-six guy |

I'm still not a fan of trading another #1 pick. |

Hind sight is always 20/20. Maybe no you can look to move Cal to a western conference team and open up more cap space. That is provided this kid is not a flash in pan and kept playing consistently.

I thought this was easy decision. Cal should have been moved last deadline. Cal just cannot stay healthy and it was time to change up the 4th line. |

Not good as but not the hugest loss as far as impact to our lineup imo. He hasn’t exactly been exceeding expectations this season. Now Pelech on the other hand… |

Neither am I BUT like I said in a recent post if we’re middle of the pack or better as far as playoff position and there’s an opportunity to improve the club for the playoffs I think Lameriello puts it in play. Preferably for a player that is a long term option. If we’re on the outside looking in or on the cusp I hope he doesn’t consider it. |

I would only move the #1 for a young long term option.

Yeah they need Pelech healthy big time.
I will say, I've been pretty impressed with the little bit of Wotherspoon that I've seen so far. He's kind of like defense-Fasching. He's never going to wow you but he may be able to carve out a role as a steady bottom pair guy. May not be here though. |

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a lot of teams moving 2024 1st rounders this year, given how deep this year's draft is |

Wotherspoon has looked good. I wonder if Bolduc gets the spot next year?

Agreed. They can try but I think a lot of teams will be demanding the 2023 for the reason you mentioned. An argument could be made that 2024’s first may be even more valuable to us. Have to figure this is out last shot with this group. |

With Mayfield likely to walk as a UFA, they're going to need someone that can play the right side. From all I can tell, Bolduc is a LD. Aho is running away with the 3LD spot so that's going to make it tough for Bolduc to crack this roster with Pelech/Romanov/Aho ahead of him. Maybe he makes it as as 7th dman but I'd argue he'd be better off going back to Bridgeport and playing big minutes instead of sitting in the press box for 70 games.
Or maybe Mayfield takes a little bit of a discount to stay put and it's a moot conversation. Bolduc may end up being a trade chip if they really don't want to move Raty. |

The question is always how much longer will these Bridgeport players stay at this level of play? Hopefully they can keep it up looks like we’re going to need them for a while longer. |

Certainly no guarantee it lasts, but they're the only options we have right now.
Fasching has 10 games under his belt already and is still looking solid.
Holmstrom has been a little up and down but mostly adequate. He wasn't scoring at the AHL level so I'm not really expecting much offensive output at the NHL level.
Too early to have a strong opinion on Raty. I've seen him twice live now and he hasn't jumped out at me, good or bad. Scoring in his first game with his parents there was real cool though.
Too early on Wotherspoon also, but I like what I've seen so far.
Salo seems to be struggling a bit but he's been getting yo-yo'd around, much like Aho did for a couple seasons. I think there's talent there but Aho has won his spot so we're going to have to be patient there. |

Aho, to me, has been the biggest maybe best surprise so far this season. Kid seems to be, at the very least, a serviceable bottom pairing defender. Raty is learning the game. Between his linemates and ice time I’m not expecting him to impress a heck of a lot but he’s holding his own so far imo. I’m sure he’ll get some more looks on the pp and with other players on his wing if he’s up for a few more games. |

Aho has been very good, save for some rocky games at the beginning of the season. He's such a good skater and he's simplified his game to the point where he's gained some confidence and become real effective. Maybe he isn't a "forever" option, but he's real solid right now. I'd like to see him stick around for awhile. He's the most mobile defender on a pretty immobile blueline. |
