I think that makes Meier the obvious choice but also makes him more expensive than a normal mercenary since he will have value after the season ends.
What's a realistic package for him? Does two firsts get it done? - JRR1285
the problem with trading with San Jose is that they are so capped out they can't even retain money

Keep in mind: Timo Meier is due a $10M qualifying offer after this season if whatever team that acquires him can't agree on a contract extension. |

is that cuz it needs to match what he's actually making this season even though his cap hit is 6m? |

Probably not.
Would probably have be more than what Florida gave up to get Giroux. Would have to probably Othmann, a 1st year this year and 1st next year for starters. Maybe more.
But that is why I suggested Drury treat him as purely as a rental. Trade him at the Draft to a team like Nashville, Buffalo or Detroit. |

the Rangers current deadline cap space is 5.4 million
it's why I still lean toward them acquiring a couple of pieces and not a big fish |

Yep. Explanation from CapFriendly below, with pertinent parts in bold:
The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary minus signing bonus), and at minimum must meet the seasons minimum salary requirements:
110% of the base salary if the base salary is less than or equal to $660,000
105% of the base salary if the base salary is greater than $660,000 or less than
$1,000,000. However, this qualifying offer cannot exceed $1,000,000.
100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.
CBA Reference 10.2 (a) (ii)
So he's making $10M base salary this season and his QO has to be 100% of that which
is $10M |

Have to imagine that a contract extension for whatever team holds his rights is the higher probability path.
If they can't agree he either becomes a free agent or signs for 1 year at 10mil?
That's a risk for the player too since he could have a down year or get injured etc.

Don't think I want a guy in Vladislav Gavrikov where as a defenseman, his best year was his first year at +1. With this rangers squad, we need someone more stable.

Yeah I can't imagine anyone acquires him without fully planning to extend him and, even though another year with $10M salary would probably be great for Timo, I'd imagine he'd rather sign a long-term deal that guarantees him way more than that.
Sharks AGM was at the NYI/DAL game the other night, so I have to imagine that one or both of those teams are interested in him. Unless DAL has interest in Karlsson or someone else, but Meier is the only Shark I could see the Isles wanting. |

Dallas probably can't afford him. next year. They would have to sign 6 other players with 5.1 million in cap space. |
