Skinner's contract is an example of paying a good-but-flawed player as if he was a star. - Slump Buster
Skinner's contract continues to be a solid deal for Buffalo. Ex Ralph Kruger, Skinner's contract is a great deal for Buffalo.
Call it a bad deal when he's not having a career year. Seems a little silly now. |

"continues" is a reach - he was at the top of the "worst contracts" lists for a reason. Yes, he is having a career year. I am tickled pink that he turned it around. He has 4 x 9 left after this year with a NMC. If he was a UFA today would I give him that deal (4 x 9)? Not a chance. For 9 mill you can't have the warts that Skinner has. I'd go out and get an even better player (like Meier). |

He still doesn't warrant 9milly but the pain of that contract is minuscule compared to when Kruger was here

I hope Skinner keeps it up. He’s playing great hockey. Biggest problem his whole career is consistency. Even if he just strings 3 good years together including this one, I’m fine with it. |

Against my better judgement, I'll post a copy of my quick projection for the Cap Hit for the this season and next 2.

Absolutely disagree. It continues to be solid because he continues to be in his prime. Tell me it's bad when hes not in his prime. And don't all the sudden tell me you can predict his prime's going to end next year or the year after that because there are plenty of guys older than him still scoring goals.

Very nice. I think that we all agree that we can absolutely fit in a star player during the next 2 years. Things get tricky after that.
On the plus side, I am much more open to acquiring a guy like Meier than I was for Debrincat. Meier is a monster.

So if a guy is his his prime..... his contract is good? If he is playing better than he used to we shouldn't be upset with his contract regardless of the number?
I like Skinner just fine. He just makes 2 - 2.5 mill per year more than he should. That isn't a criticism of him, it is just reality. Its another example of why you don't put yourself in a position of having to make that kind of deal with no leverage.

It's a good contract because he's a dominant player outplaying 9 million, and he's going to continue to be. And he was last year too. And he dropped a 40-goal season for us before that too. |

And in reality, having Skinner for 2.5 extra is absolutely worth it even if it means not keeping someone like Jokiharju |

Exactly how much more leverage do the Sabres need? They had $20 mil in cap space all of last season. They had to sign players to make the floor last year and this year. And you're making some nonsensical point about leverage.
Can your argument line up with the reality of the situation please? The Buffalo Sabres, the team who pays Jeff Skinner $9 mil, have more leverage than any almost any team in the sport, but Jeff Skinner is holding them back. |

Wow, that's a really rosy picture. He is having a very good year. You still didn't answer the question - if here were a UFA today would you pay him 4 x 9 with a full NMC?
You also forget three things:
- he was a complete no-show for more than 2 years here. It started the year he scored 40 and continued into the next year. He was playing with Jack on the first line and wasn't doing anything. We can blame Ralphie for a ton of things but there was no doubt that Skinner was mailing it in most nights. Chicken and egg, I guess.
- A fair amount of his success has to be attributed to playing with two freaks every night.
- He is an absolute disaster defensively.

I think he’s referring to a DeBrincat/Meier situation where the player would have the leverage in contract negotiations if we trade for them before signing them to an extension |

Vic is one trick pony.
We had an eight game losing streak because Sammy was hurt.
Skinner is on a bad contract.
Asplund is an elite defensive player.
There are always flat out wrong narratives that get talked into existence in Sabre land. |
