Great article by ASF Bill.
Anything to add on this sack of poop country club? Like I always said, winning doesn’t matter here. Just making sure the good ol’ boys keep their jobs.
Despicable, and incompetent men. Every single one. It’s a good thing those who have managed to hide for so long are slowly being exposed.

Oh no, they want to win. You see, it’s even worse than if they didn’t care. Clarke and his posse of dinosaurs actually think Fletcher has made the right moves to get this team back into contention. They are as clueless as they are arrogant. |

Very good article. Although I think ASF had one thing not quite right. From what I see, the fans don't think that the old guard are actually making the moves. They're just influencing the team approach and who is hired and fired. Can't hide it anymore.

Bill Meltzer: Flyers Gameday: 1/24/23 vs. LAK - bmeltzer
Watched the Tortorella presser today. I really like the questions the media asked about Tony DeAnglo. I’m not sure how I feel about Torts’ response. I think a guy kinda called Torts out in his questioning, when do you just accept that he’s not very good defensively. I understand wanting to work with DeAngelo but you can’t get blood from a stone. I think either one of Seeler or York can replace DeAngelo on the PK. I’d like to see York close out games, which York isn’t seeing that opportunity. He should be. |

Some more examples that ASF missed:
- Flyers spend a 6th-round draft pick to take then team president Peter Luukko's son Nick, a mediocre high school prep player. Nick has a short career with the Flyers' ECHL affiliate in Reading, retires and is immediately hired as an assistant coach there,
- Hexy signed his own son to play for the Phantoms, then after he retires from playing after a single season, he's immediately added to the Flyers coaching staff. Now he's working under dad in Pittsburgh,
- Chris Pryor helped to get his son Nick hired as a scout by the Flyers, and now he's working under dad in Pittsburgh as well,
- Clarke's son Wade seems to have a lifetime job as a Flyers scout,
- Clarke's daughter Jody also has a lifetime job working in the front office,
- Danny Briere is hired by the team as a special assistant and his son magically gets invited to development camp,
- etc etc etc |

That's kind of the point.
Oh, and Sanheim is actually related to Hexy, who drafted him. |

I think ASF's article was interesting in that he noted how rampant the NHL is with nepotism. In the same vein as Peter Luuko's son being drafted, the Coyotes took Doan's son as an over-ager in the 2nd round. Brodeur's kid was taken by the Devils at some point. Now the Coyotes have about, roughly 8000 2nd rounders over the next few years so maybe they could afford it. |

I read the article.
1) People missed this takeaway -- which I've been saying for years because I'm actually around both the team and the Alumni: "That narrative is completely wrong when it comes to making roster decisions." So can we finally put that one rest?
2) The only senior advisor who was part of the interviewing process for the head coach was Dean Lombardi. Not Clarke. Not Homer. Not Barber. Not Mike O'Connell. Yes, their opinions were asked about candidates -- that is what their role is: give an opinion is asked for one. Guess what: If the torch mob got their way, at least some of their opinions would privately be asked for.
3) You lose any and all credibility when you use the word "despicable". Homer especially is a very high character person. So is Bill Barber. I don't personally know Clarke or Lombardi very well but I know how personally fond Jay Greenberg was of Clarke and that Lombardi confided in Jay during the writing of Flyers at 50 (things that never made the book). I have a lot of respect for Homer and all the things he does for people without ever wanting any publicity for it. He's a tremendous human being.
As far as "incompetent" goes, there's a lot of evidence to the contrary, although every GM makes mistakes along the way.
4) There's plenty of stuff behind the scenes that you aren't privy to. I only am privy to a fraction of it. I will just say this. Pulling the management strings of the org from afar is not Clarke's main interest nowadays and certainly not Homer's. And Ant knows some of it but chose not to refer to it because it's off the record.

happenes in a lot of work places really. but still have questions.....like why didn't we draft Kapanen...what did his dad do? or Primeau? - Peter Richards
Sami Kapanen (who is back working with the org as a development coach and scout in Europe) and Keith Primeau didn't "do" anything. Sami especially has always been highly regarded. Their sons weren't drafted for the same reasons that other Alumni sons don't get drafted. The Flyers didn't draft Ridly Greig, either, and his dad (Flyers/Phantoms alum and longtime current western Canada scout Mark) was glad for it.
It's a no-win situation: Draft the Alum's kid and people scream nepotism. Don't draft him and "it's what did his dad do for you not to draft him?" |

Continue to defend it. That’s where you lose credibility.
Keeping the Flyers family together, is clearly more important than success. |

This guy is up ice so often you might as well just make him a winger. It's terrible actually. I have to correct myself from the beginning of the year when I thought this guy was a good bit better than Ghost. He is just another Ghost and perhaps he's even worse without a good complimenting defense partner that suits his game. |
