I really hope Sabres live expands. Marty and Duffer know the league backwards and forwards.

Duffer is a bit too homer for me, like a howard simon level 2

Steve Shields. Did everyone else immediately think Garth Snow too?
- lacaprup

I thought snow was bigger... but that may just be his equipment lol

Hanafin, like Noah Hanafin? He's excellent. Very, very good. And he's had a better career than someone else from that draft, which would just be a little meaningless, delicious cherry on top.

edit: meant to quote a different post, but still the same question. Hanafin would be a tremendous add.

- lacaprup

Yes, Noah Hanafin.

That's a move that makes the top 6 solid like a rock for years. Nothing like the chicken man's injury list

My "issue" with levi that im a tad afraid of is does he have the nhl body? Is he goign to be in the same vain and that college football player who is amazing in college but rather pedestrian in the league?
Remember steve sheilds was a great college goalie as well. Portillo has the body the NHl is looking for.

- hubie

Steve shields had the nhl body he was 6’3” and I didn’t think he was skinny. He isn’t Portillo tall. But he is taller than Miller

Smaller goalies can make it. They just have to be that much quicker and athletic.

Both shields and snow were listed at 6’3” and a little over 200 lbs.

He was the first one that came to mine with a real good college career that was average in the nhl .

Id like it, one more year of service on a fair contract. My issue is there isnt much in the pipeline for D men so we will have to find it elsewhere.

Gotcha. I think the bigger thing might be to look at the team in front of them. I have no clue about his college career. But if shields had good defenders and/or a defensive system it could have made him look better than he was.

One of my knocks on ullmark was that he didn’t do that great of a job controlling rebounds and once he went down he was slow to get back up. I was watching a bruins game the other day and the announcers talked about how the bruins were the best at not allowing second shots. That really benefits Ullmarks game. Not saying he isn’t good because he is. But I think where he is playing is really inflating how good he is.

Sabres can fit Meier long term but it won't be easy.

Pretty much agree, but that 1st becomes less important the farther the Sabres move up the standings. Yes it's a good forward draft, but the meat and what are prospect pool needs(Defense) is heavy between 35-65. Those 2nds could be just as important.
- Buff36

On the 1st becoming less important the further the Sabres move up the standings, I'll refer you to the following:

https://www.capfriendly.com/players/jiri-kulich

The Sabres drafted Kulich at 28 overall just last draft.

Would you consider him less important? He may be the Sabres top prospect right now, and the upcoming draft is considered to be quite a bit stronger than the last draft.

It's why I'm not trading the 2023 1st.

I have no problem trading the 2024 1st.

Swedish vibes aside?
- kingcong39

There's definitely a group of good buddies on the Sabres vibing together.

Asplund/olofsson are best friends , as well as dahlin.

Every thing is going smoothly, why change the vibes?

Does it make a difference at all that he's a UFA after next season, and that he's a left shot LHD?

I have no idea if he or Power can play their off side, unless you want Hanifin to anchor the 3rd pair.

Definitely something going on there, especially after that letter. Still wouldn't mind adding a Swiss Knife to that top 6.

For me its more of a guy whos drafting than the spot. I was calling for Lambert at that spot so i would be wrong like im sure many others would.

I think we can deal the pick because we have so many forward prospects we have needs.

There's even more of a need for one high end forward prospect if you are dealing for a player like Meier and plan on extending him, as you're going to need a number of prospects that hopefully a few of end up being impact players for you on ELC deals.

This draft is loaded. Do not trade the pick. They're going to need that ELC production down the road.

I think they'd find a way to make it work. Dahls and Sammy switch often. He's quality. But. You're right it is a real consideration.

Nobody is can't miss.

The Sabres have been drafting well lately, and were able to get Peterka and Kulich toward the end of the first round or early in the 2nd round.

It is also not said every draft.

Just looking at the stats profiles of the forwards at the end of the first round and beginning of the second round is stark, especially compared to normal years.
