Win Percentage to achieve 100 pts:

NYI – 0.529 – 0.750 – an increase of 0.221!!

Acquiring Horvat alone does not seem to move NYI this far, gotta improve a bit more.
Nextmove for Lou is:

I get that Lou had to do something like this. He fired Trotz for how the team finished last season, so it's on him to get a better result this year. In that position, he can't really sell or stand pat and expect to keep his job.

But, I gotta say I'm not crazy about the timing. Three teams to leapfrog -- two of which have games in hand on the Isles -- and they have to count on the reigning President's Trophy winners being truly down and out behind them. And that's all just to grab the last wildcard spot. Seems like a risky position to be in to start jettisoning first rounders and what few top prospects the team has left, and putting more expensive vet contracts on the books. You have to really believe this team can win the Cup very soon, and, for whatever it's worth, my opinion is the back-to-back conference finals runs were the best this group had in it.

But, all that said, a move like this will at least make the rest of the season interesting. And if I'm wrong, I guess that means the team goes on a tear and wins the Cup, and I can live with that.

I agree with you. The bold is where my main issue is. Now he does this with everything you mentioned? The chance of this going south is better then it going good. I don’t think there’s too many people who disagree with that. They may like the excitement of kind of “going for it” but any objectionable person should be able to see exactly what you mentioned along with the long term negative implications. I also agree it makes it interesting to watch till at least the TDL. Between last year and this I was starting to tune out.

The playoff chances are remote at best. What that leaves us with is; we've traded a cond 1st rd pick, Raty and Beau for the rights to negotiate a contract with Bo Horvat.
Risky pool for a team that has been unable lure big name free agents in the past.

Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect that, while Lou was prohibited from negotiating a contract in advance with Bo, he has (I hope) done business with his agent in the past and knows him to be a reasonable guy. Fingers crossed...

I keep expecting to hear that he’s signed an extension with the Islanders.

I mean… surely that was discussed between to two sides prior to the trade?

If so, then I can get on board with the move. I’d much rather pay Horvat top dollar rather than say.. a guy like Kadri. But if no extension was discussed, then the risk of Horvat walking outweighs what was given to acquire him.

I agree with most of this assessment. I think the most credible story I heard was the one where Lou offered Barry an extension and got turned down. I suspect Barry figured he had gotten everything he could get out of this team, and wanted to keep his options open. However, Lou was afraid of losing Lane who supposedly was sought after by other teams, so in order to keep him, he fired Barry and gave Lane the coaching job. Is it true? Maybe....

I’m rather ignorant of how such dealings are done. Is there a rule stating Lou was prohibited from such discussions? Or did the Canucks not give permission for such discussions?

It's the latter.

Friedman also reported a few times that the Canucks were not allowing teams to talk extension with Horvat. And both Horvat and the team seem to have said that they have not talked extension yet either, so that seems to be the case

It's possible that the Canucks allowed the Isles to speak to him after they had agreed upon a deal, but I doubt we'll ever know that

Supposedly he turned down a contract offer with Vancouver early on. Vancouver did not allow teams to negotiate with Bo. I know his family was heavily entrenched in the area, so his wife has to play a factor here. Again we get into all of those UFA factors that often leave us wondering why player x didn't sign here. Taxes? Wife influence? Did he already have a franchise on his mind? This is his big payout contract so will he want to test free agency and tell us 'we can talk in the summer?'
Clearly nothing is in place. This is a gamble by Lou with all his chips in.
