It doesn't. It takes into account that he was on the ice 7 shot attempts for/19 against. 3 scoring chances for/9 against. 0 high danger chances for/6 against.

Right. So, it takes into account a limited number of aspects. Meaning, by design the resulting data is flawed. It can only go downward from there as you get more critical of the data.
Does it take into account that ANY 4th line in the league typically sees playing time with the 3rd defensive pair while against the opposing top line?
No one is making the case that Leschyshyn is some hidden talent or that he's about to break out. But, he was a minus 1. That's one shift where the opposing pressure you fret over so much actually resulted in a goal. OMG, a 4th line got scored on! Stop the press!!

Carolina is an amazing faceoff team, it's actually pretty good on the road against them to go 7-6
- jimbro83

I agree and it might have been why Gallant wanted to get him in there. Vesey is also playing way too well to be relegated to 4th line minutes. With Kravtsov in the lineup, I actually think they are worse overall right now.

Vesey being off the 4th line is better than Kravtsov being in the lineup. It has very little to do with Jake Leschyshyn.

I just don’t get how this definition applies to role players:

“The stats I used are goals, primary assists, secondary assists, shots on goal, blocked shots, penalty differential, faceoffs, 5-on-5 corsi differential, 5-on-5 goal differential.”

They also state that the stat should be used to find “who the best player of the night is”. I think even a casual fan of hockey would know that the third and fourth line aren’t comprised of players trying to be “the best player of the night.”

Unless they’re captured in in Corsi, it lacks skills like hits, faceoffs, takeaways, giveaways, taking penalties, drawing penalties, forechecking, back checking, to name a few.

Thats the thing though. I expected a not so great game. Had a bunch of games, traveled, back to back, rested Canes team... They just needed to find a way to win and they did. It was the Halak/Panarin show. Now if every game looked like that, I would say the Rangers are in trouble.

Most teams aren’t Carolina so I think we’re ok there

what is going unsaid is how little Goodrow is being used on faceoffs the last month, and the fact that Goodrow has had a pretty bad year on faceoffs

Honestly I was very surprised when the post article mentioned how well Goodrow has been playing. I honestly think he has been a non-factor most nights. But I do think that actually has to do with his deployment. He has not playing a lot of minutes for a good stretch. (or so it seems)

I think if there is a player to move on from if possible this off season, it's Goodrow.

Carolina is just relentless. One thing I noticed with them though, while its very tough to get sustained pressure in their zone, they do seem to give up a bunch of odd man rushes. Just have to make the best of the limited chances you get against them.

I expect some clutch playoff goals, its hard to make those kinds of declarations now, who is leaving who is staying

It’s him and/or lindgren. Those are the only movable contracts

My understanding is that the stats assume that if you are giving up chances against then you aren't faring well in those aspects. But, there is a hell of a lot more that goes into a shift then just those outcomes. That will always be the sticking point with me. Things can be learned from the stats, of course. But, not everything.

I was so pissed at Panarin for flubbing his 2 on 1, and then he respond s by scoring 4 goals

Exactly. Not sure how many times it was mentioned during the broadcast, but they are so tenacious that they are prone to giving up odd man rushes. That is the way to beat them, and that's just what we did. But, because that doesn't win the possession battle, people think it's some sort of lucky win.

when you score a goal, you are giving up possession

coach made great adjustments going into 3rd, how many shots did Carolina have in 3rd period
- jimbro83

Attempts or actually shots? Because in attempts Carolina had 12 for and 10 against. Only 4 of the 12 attempts were registered as shots on goal.

I don't think many teams win the underlying stats battle against the Canes.

only 10 against because our shots were going in. If carolina goalie makes more saves, we'd have more attempts

Well then I would argue that their shooting sucked that period and should not factor into the deserve to win-o-meter.
