I'd like to take a swing at a player like that. So who/what do we send to Detroit?
It almost needs to be $ in for $ out, so are we looking at 1st or 2nd + player to make it work?
Gotta try something because standing pat isnt enough. Sure you could sneak in but wont go anywhere if you do. Either swing for the fence or start the rebuild. Following the Steelers Mediocrity Plan wont cut it |

Nice article.
I am hoping Vrana exorcizes his demons and is able to stay with Detroit. I don't foresee any movement til he plays a few games while up with the Wings. |

Yeah, I don't think they have a single prospect that Detroit would want in exchange for Vrana. Their cupboard of prospects are as bare as Detroit's was when we finally started the rebuild. |

I’d rather offer the 1st round pick POJ and Pickering for Bertuzzi. Or anything they want really. |

Did Detroit not just put Vrana on waivers and no one claimed him? Pretty sure the asking price to get him off the books isn't going to be all that much. |

I honestly think that Vrana was sent to Grand Rapids to get his game going again. Not so much physically, but mentally and emotionally. When he was cleared to play, I believe Wings mgt saw that he was not ready yet. In order to send him down, they had to use waivers. Luckily, nobody claimed him, but maybe the rest of the league knew the reason and stayed away. And just last week, Vrana spoke about what is going on with him and he had nothing but good things to say about the Wings and that he wants to remain with the Wings. Hopefully he's fully recovered from whatever was interfering in his life and he's ready to resume his NHL Career. |

Most teams don't have $5M in cap space. Therefore, it was a gamble worth taking. I too hope he's straightened himself out.
My question is, is Detroit even shopping him? He's not that old, the Wings seem to be on the verge of becoming a playoff team. He would be a good asset to have. I don't see how they improve themselves by trading him at this point. |

I have not paid much attention to Vrana recently but back when he played for the Capitals and even when he first went to the Red Wings he was a "Penguins killer". I guess his play has slipped. Regardless, I don't think the Pens have enough cap space even if Detroit eats some of his salary. |

And what teams had 5m in cap space to take on a player that hadn't played in months coming out of the assistance program?
There's more nuance to these things but nobody is surprised someone that pays for HB doesn't understand that. |

4 scenarios here
1: No retention, no cap dump coming back - 2nd and B prospect or more
2: No retention, cap dump coming back - 2nd and B+ prospect or more
3: Retention, no cap dump coming back - 2nd and B+ prospect or 1st and B prospect or more
4: Retention, cap dump coming back - 2nd and A prospect or 1st and B+ prospect or more
Keep in mind that there are rarely any substantial leaks about what Yzerman is working on so we don't really know if Vrana trades are even being discussed |

Play has not slipped whatsoever.
He had major shoulder surgery and missed most of last season before coming back and going on an absolute tear.
This season he posted 1-1-2 in 2 games before going into the assistance program which I have confirmed had nothing to do with substance abuse. |

Okay EK.
How about a 3-team trade, something like:
To Pit - Vrana at 25%
To team B (Arizona) - Pit 3rd rounder and Vrana at 25%
To Det - Pit 2nd rounder |

Funny to me how down and out some fans get around here, and other places, when the Pens win against a bottom dweller but probably didn't deserve to. However, they see no light or good in all the times the Pens outplayed better opponents and deserved to win, but didn't this season. Both situations are met with a similar gloom and doom.
Pens need to tighten up their game, much like they needed to in October and did. There's still over a 1/3 of the season left. So much time to do so...and perhaps they don't...but this team is better than a lot of you think it is.

Pens are just too Jekyl and Hyde. Not enough consistency, and poor support scoring (bottom 6 and dmen).
Good reason to be down and out if you went into this season thinking the Pens would be a contender lol.
17th in GF, 17th in GA. They are an average hockey team.
