I'll put a bow on this as it spiraled into a different question. I am not saying that UPL is god or that he should even be the starter next year. All I am saying is that when you consider the state of goaltending in the NHL right now (and the scoring explosion - something else that isn't brought up much), it wouldn't surprise me if we can't do better. Again, look at the goalies that moved last offseason - it wasn't good. If we can go out and get a guy like Saros, great. But who else would be a target where we could reasonably expect to be an upgrade over UPL? That's all I was really asking.

You look at those logs and THAT is what you come away with? That tells me nothing of how he played. We both know why you left that part of the equation out - it didn't support the narrative.
- Slump Buster

Talk about not supporting a narrative...

Per Natural Stat Trick, since December 1st (not including the mess from the last game he played) for goaltender rankings:

- 5v5 save percentage: UPL ranks 54th out of 70 goaltenders with a .907
- 5v5 high danger shots against per 60 = 9 for UPL (22nd highest in the league). Craig Anderson is averaging 9.65 against per 60, which is 15th highest in the league.
- 5v5 high danger save percentage: UPL ranks 46th out of 70 qualified goaltenders at .827
- UPL is 25th in terms of shots against per 60 at 5v5, at 31.38. Ullmark averages 30.72 by comparison

Updating the date range to January 1st through before his last game:

- 5v5 save percentage: 43rd out of 52 qualified goaltenders at .900
- 5v5 high danger shots against per 60 = 8.4 for UPL (30th highest in the league)
- 5v5 high danger save percentage: UPL ranks 49th out of 52 goaltenders at .757
- UPL is 13th in terms of shots against per 60 at 5v5, at 32.51

Don't listen to Marty and Duffer if you want a warm fuzzy about last night.

Duffer's ripping the rookies, Marty's ripping Vic. They both want Meier.

Vic was god awful last night.

Quinn was pretty good last night. JJ was meh. Krebs was good.

On February 16, 2004 Miroslav Satan had the only 4-goal game of his NHL career in the Sabres 7 - 2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Can UPL bee a starting caliber goalie someday. - maybe.

Is he one now. - No.

End

This is correct. How 3.47 goals against and 890 save % is below average and not good

Agree with this

Krebs. I have said it here. He needs to play with talent. He set up Okposo and Girgs too many times to not get rewarded lol

I also kinda liked the lines last night. Even though olofsson and cozens didn’t seem to vibe

Sure, I love it. Now the second problem - is there a realistic chance to acquire him? Detroit wouldn't move their established goalie on a team-friendly contract. I doubt Sarros is available either.

So the kid is a rookie and his story is written? Goalies peak in their rookie year? He hasn't gotten better as the year went along? And winning? Nothing to see here?

EDIT: again, I am not trying to say he is bad or great. The statement was this: I think it is going to be very very difficult to try to find someone that we can reasonably expect to be better than he has been over the last few weeks.

He did one of those pseduoclears that ended up being a pass to Anaheim last night. It almost got Dahlin hit in the head by the shot.

That's part of the bigger point. Look at all of the teams that won with rookies or unproven goalies over the last decade. For whatever reason teams get behind the rookie and collectively they all take off. Anderson absolutely has better stats than UPL and for whatever reason the team seems to play better in front of UPL. It could be a chicken-and-egg thing.

Pretty sure two of his giveaways in the d zone ended up in the back of the Sabres net

Ah, ok. But that's the problem. Out of all of the goalies that moved, most didn't work out. I liked him more than most, but clearly he was far from a sure thing given the modest money he got. Sure, go out and get another guy. But I fear that it is really going to be just another Comrie or Hutton (guys that had good success in the past with good underlying numbers, but it doesn't work out for whatever reason).

What was kind of ironic about the one play is that he actually made a great play to backcheck to cover up his D. Then he made a poor decision with the puck.

Someone asked a couple weeks ago why escrow was bad for the NHL players.

This Bally Sports issue is why. Because of escrow, the players are going to pay a very large % of that lost revenue because a television company was mismanaged. That should be a loss taken 100% by the owners who choose thier TV partners.

I don't think that a guy that is as sensitive about future cap concerns as Adams appears to be would ever give him significant jack on a long-term deal.
