Problem with Meier is that stupid QO at 10+ million. He could refuse to sign anything and just become a UFA. But if the hope is to get a player in his prime as a rental, yeah, he's definitely a better option.
- Rare_Jewel

Agree

Still would take the risk and have Meier for a rental this year for more than we gave up for ROR.

At least if he’s going to put his job on the line he could go hard.

This is the same situation as Murray as well. The hope was he would turn it around and it was a risk. Good thing we got Samsonov too or we would be facked

Yes exactly!

He did this last year... got an older washed up player out of his prime for a 1st... same poop different year 😂

Out of everyone available you strike early.. and dump it into a -21 player that’s coming off injury.

Better hope this works or it’s your job budd

- Canadianleaf

I think Shanahan is behind this move. If it fails, Dubas gets the blame and gets the door.

Might have to look at options to reinforce the goaltending too because you don't know how Samsonov is going to look by time the playoff rolls around if he has to play 50-60 games and Murray is still bouncing on and off the LTIR.

Hope not but probably looks like it except O'Reilly was a legit winner in the past so there's a higher ceiling. Has still looked brutal this year so it's going to take a monumental turn around to reach that ceiling.

Ya and with Murray returning they have just Over 1M.

So will need to dump salary to get anything now. Or cough up more picks for salary retentions.

TSN is saying it’s a great trade for the leafs.

I guess we will have to see. But, would have went after many other people with what he gave up here.

Better option than Toews I guess. But, not by much.

Hope we’re wrong 😂

Is he still a very good 3C or did he USE TO BE a very good 3C? He has as many goals as Jarnkrok, he's -24 and been on the ice for 50 goals against this year. His foot speed has never been all that great and he barely hits or blocks shots anymore. Does he fit the way the Leafs play?

He wins FOs but other than that, I don't see how good he is anymore.

- Rare_Jewel

He was injured with a broken foot, playing on a terrible team with a big goalie issues. This guy was an MVP on a cup winning team. He is a solid two way centre. Can play top six or make the Leafs third line as good as any in the league. Leafs gave up alot to get him, but at the very least I think both Bruins and Lightning aren't too happy about this trade.

Foligno was never in the same category as ROR, Buffalo went into a giant nosedive the minute he was traded to the Blues where he was their best player and captain.

Exactly my sentiments, its probably a good trade but it's hard to see how it's going to turn out positively because nothing has worked out in the playoffs. We'll see how it goes.

it's just stupid to obsess over O'Reilly's plus/minus this season

if that mattered then it was stupid for St Louis to acquire him in the first place in his last season in Buffalo where his plus minus was terrible

Looks like I went to bed about 10 minutes too early.

Take a while to digest all of this. But I do like Acciari. He's the dog with the bone type. Ain't givin' 'er up easy.

As a guy who has regularly talked about the need to improve the bottom six and add some bite and physicality, I like the spirit of this trade...but that is a lot of picks. Let's hope it works out. I'd love to see them add a physical defender now, too.

Blues could have been ok if they would have sent Binnington to Robidas Island. O'Reilly playing in the Leafs top six might yield some decent results when compared to the plugs he was playing with in St. Louis and the sideshow that is Binnington.

Leafs now have best centre depth in the league, more gritty bottom six, didn’t lose any prospects that matter and still have some cap flexibility. Im ok. If UG was still around he could tell us just about how much we’re going to miss every pick between 26 and 32 that we're giving up but that’s just one more thing we miss about UG.

Maybe start him 3C and move him up if you need scoring? I dunno. Lots of options

Murray moved from IR to LTIR at 12:05. Leafs “technically” have $4.4M available cap space to use right now until, you know, Murray comes back. (Or did they have to do that to fit the new guys?)

Dubas paid a hefty price but got ROR for 1.8m, acciari and a prospect. Not bad.
ROR needs to be extended.

- Fakepartofme

The problem with that statement is that we need to see how he hits in here, how he plays, and what he expects. I wouldn't extend him until we had a better feel for what we have.

The Leafs' system isn't some super complex machine that's hard to understand, but it is very fluid and requires more defensive posture attention to what your teammates are doing - so you need to keep up, keep in cycle and don't get caught throwing unnecessary pin hits after the play is moving back up ice. Some guys who play here have that obvious problem - Aube-Kubel, Ritchie, Hunt - hey you want to go throw hits? That's great, but it can't come at the expense of your defensive role or positional expectations; I believe a general rule is that a hit is smart as a defensive play, but otherwise it's generally disadvantageous. O'Reilly is very smart, and I'm thinking he's pretty adaptable.

This year he's played predominantly with Saad and Leivo - neither of whom are exactly at the top of their games either. This is more of a 3rd line role. They've had mediocre expected goals, and are -1 together. Overall O'Rielly has had a positive expected goals - playing with most guys in various capacities on the Blues - but has generally been a net negative in actual goals. His worst linemates were Kyrou and Schenn where he was caved in both by expectation and by reality - being -3 in just 40 minutes of ice time. I'm not sure he's a guy who you want on your top line!

But he should probably be viewed as a third line player, and his expectations should be in line with that sort of salary.
