Ya, agreed. If Dubas went all in and paid the price for Meier then I'd have understood it as well. But he's either discovered that Knies, 23' firsts, +++ wasn't enough OR decided he didn't want to pay that price and preferred to roll the dice on RoR.
I'm sure he's done better scouting on what's going on with RoR then us so fingers crossed. The recency bias says Meier > RoR but if both are healthy and we're focused on this playoff run then RoR at his best is better than Meier. - The Law
It’s reported that Armstrong gave ROR a say as to where he went. He and family said, Toronto and the two GMs made it work. (Disclaimer: this per Carlo C) |

Lol ...wait til you see the price paid for Meier and Chychrun. This is naive.
Knies would have had to be in there on top of everything else. - The Law
This is my point with that speculation that the Leafs paid "too much". We don't know what is being discussed for the big names still out there and whether or not the we could even bring in one of those guys and stay under the cap. |

That's a bonus. I was curious to hear how he felt about the trade. He didn't have any trade protection so huge bonus to hear that he wants to be here.
Getting ahead of myself but if the fit is nice he could choose to stick around this summer. You know, why not go for two in a row? |

Horvat cost the Islanders 4.125 AAV this year as a rental. Dump Kerfoot and the money is the same. Dump Muzzin and an extension is possible too. And he's on pace for 50 goals, in his prime, plays C, wins FOs. Having a 1.8 cap hit means next to nothing at the end of the season. I'd rather pay a high price and get a guy in his prime than pay a premium to hope a player goes back to playing like he did 3 years ago. - Rare_Jewel
Meiers QO seemed like a bit of a roadblock.
Essentially ROR is a 3rd line center who can move up the line up to play wing if need be.
He brings some skill and punch the leafs needed.....if he stays healthy.
I wasnt a big fan of the trade initially when i had just heard lots of picks for ROR, but with 75% retained and Acciari...im hoping its what pushes the leafs for sure to the next round.
Still more moves to come i would think, small ones but we'll see |

Leafs now have best centre depth in the league, more gritty bottom six, didn’t lose any prospects that matter and still have some cap flexibility. Im ok. If UG was still around he could tell us just about how much we’re going to miss every pick between 26 and 32 that we're giving up but that’s just one more thing we miss about UG. - Canada Cup
Ug would like ROR. He’s no Karlsson, but still a good add. |

So is this the best centre depth the Leafs have ever had, or does Gilmour - Sundin - Muller still top it?
Discuss. - Atomic Wedgie
In order
Matthews
Sundin
Gilmour
Tavares
RoR
Muller (when the Leafs had him)
Looks like a toss-up overall. Matthews needs to do more in the playoffs. He has not been an 11+ million guy in the playoffs.

You're citing a guy who walked around swinging a stick at a stationary ball an athlete? You know the difference between him and those convicts who have to stab and pick up trash at the side of the road is that one is horrible person doing something good and the other is a golfer. - Monkeypunk

Ya, to say could have had Meier for an "extra 2nd rounder" doesn't correspond to what's being reportedly asked.
Elite prospect, multiple 1sts. Which makes sense bc SJ could keep him and worst case flip him next deadline for a RoR price. So you want him this year then you pay that plus a lot more. |

As former President of the Meier fan club, I’m happy. Significant upgrade with no roster players lost and the outlook going forward is still good. Ultimately, Leafs’ future over next few years looks better than Boston or TBL in my view. This trade gives team credible shot at getting through first round at least without hurting them going forward. - Canada Cup
People keep posting this, and sure, I guess it's a positive but Leafs need a few roster players going out.
Holl, Kerfoot, Engvall, Anderson is where they start. Free up almost $10M and we wouldn't miss any one of those guys. There all redundant:
Holl - Timmins (better/cheaper)
Kerfoot - RoR/Jarnkrok (better/cheaper)
Engvall - Acciari (better/cheaper)
Anderson - My Left Nut (better/cheaper)
This is a good trade. The 2nd/3rd/4th picks mean poop. Late first is an "iffy" pick at best. RoR, who I didn't care to get, is a good player still. We all remember losing JT to the Habs. Our C depth is awesome now. Acciari from what I now know is a hitter and perfect for the bottom 6.
If Leafs move Holl/Kerfoot/Engvall out and get a 2-4LW or a proper D, this team is stacked and full of depth.
Bunting, Matthews, Nylander
RoR, Tavares, Marner
Is a pretty solid top 6 if you move RoR to 3C and add a LW, that top 9 would be ridiculous for playoffs.

We also don't know if RoR is interested in re-signing. You have to think he is too young for a Giordano type deal but it is way more likely he is affordable than Meier. I know CC and I differ but re-signing Meier was going to force another trade (Nylander).
So basically if you go all in on Meier, you either rent him and get a small return for his rights, or you sign him, trade Nylander, get a return that is futures-oriented and take on a few M more in cap when you have Matthews next huge contract coming up. I don't know if I even want Meier over Nylander. |
