I can see Knies playing on ROR's wing on the 3rd line. And if he excels, might even move up to 2LW. Ya, it's a lot to ask a rookie, but he's a big body and will be well insulated.

Let's move out some bottom 6 guys and some more prospects and get an upgrade on D.

Yep they did and yep they did. What they didn't do: win 4 straight.

I don’t care how good a player he is… a rookie is not gonna be able to handle the pressure and intensity of playoff hockey in Toronto… He will be terrified of making a mistake and play tight .. especially with the stigma of the team needing to get out of the 1st round…

That would be a bad idea against the Bolts.

As usual Dubas was a day late and a dollar short.

You go out and spend your pile of picks for a guy who is -23 having the worst season of his career and everybody is calling that a home run? What the (frank) kind of hopeium are you smoking Dubas?

When you look at what the Islanders gave up to get Horvat, the Leafs got the wrong guy, even as a rental. If he was at least solid defensively and weak offensively, you could make the case he fills a role but both his offense and defense are both in steep decline. I think the Leafs paid heavily for past performance instead of getting somebody at their peak ability.

Acciari looks like a good bottom 6 player but O'Reilly has looked terribly over the hill this year and it's going to take a miracle to get him to be worth a 1st round pick considering all the other options available.

I mysteriously contracted the yips about 8 years ago. Hit me on the practice green at Rattlesnake on my first round of the year.
Can’t shake it, and now only play one round of golf a year because I have to. I have to putt opposite hand. It eventually crept into my short wedge game.

So, in one sense, this deal was a vote of confidence for the blue line, as currently constructed. Either Justin Holl or Timothy Liljegren will be getting top-four minutes. Either Rasmus Sandin or Conor Timmins will be getting playoff games.

An interesting tidbit from Mirtle. Kind of scary..

Bo Horvat was perfectly available for weeks and months before hand and Dubas was sleeping at the wheel.

Parayko might have been available for that price, Chychrun and we'll see who else gets moved in the coming days and weeks. Guys with a long term contracts and under 30 are available all the time and the price the Leafs paid for a rental that you have to HOPE plays well just isn't a good gamble in my book.

I know I blamed Dubas earlier but the more I think about it, this trade seems more like Shanahan reaching over Dubas and making this move. If it doesn't work out, Dubas gets blamed and no extension after doing a 180 on a "no rental" speech recently.

Horvat was never coming to Toronto. Vancouver specifically was looking for the highest first round pick for him. Its why he was traded to a bubble team.

I doubt Knies plays in the playoffs. I worry about him going up against Tampa’s third line after 3 games in the league or being stuck on against the top line after an icing. Heard him say he needs to work on his first step in his skating and the move from playing on Olympic sized rinks makes decision making even more challenging. Maybe it’s easier if they can protect him with ROR and someone but it seems like a risk and I’m a big Knies fanboy

Some people will hate anything the Leafs do.
I could care less about the draft picks at this point. It’s time to take a run at this thing.
And ROR will resign on a Gio like deal. He will love the protection he has with 2 excellent centers to help share some of the burden.

I think youre right that they wouldn't have got him, but I think the Leafs were in on Horvat, and I'll give you my simple theory why.

This is the 3rd year in a row that they've delt for another teams captain leading up to the deadline. Dubie loves leadershipy guys.

My speculation is based on his skating and time to adjust. If they could find protected minutes I could see it. (13 forwards?)

So was Toronto his only choice?
If so, thats alot of pick capital

- Fakepartofme

Don’t see it that way. He didn’t have any protection. Armstrong said he’d try to accommodate him. If Dubas (frank)ed with that there’d be no deal and he’d just look like a Richard.

True.

As CC noted above... it's just not the best case for the Leafers ... with Noel and ROR in the fold no need for him on this run...
