This kind of deal is not "won" or lost. The teams were looking for two different things.
This is what it costs to beef up your lineup with 2 guys, ready to go now, at a price you can afford in a hard cap.
It's a risky move for sure. |

Toronto paid way TOOOO much
but ...
O Reillys is exactly what Toronto needs .

I didn’t know ROR played defense and goal. Because that is what they need. It is a home run swing for the GM, who will be exiting stage left if they don’t win the cup this year. |

Wash, rinse, repeat for the leafs. Great offense average defense goaltending flat out BLOWS! Another year of out in the first round and they gave up all of those draft picks for very average players. Same old leafs! - Bobd62

Unless he's a goalie, I don't see this moving the needle much.

Well you said their goaltending is bad, but Samsonov is in the top-10 in all stats and has been great. He might implode and suck in the playoffs...poop happens...but what more could you ask for? Him being THE BEST goalie in the NHL? |

Please make a list of the things you don’t know. Leafs 5th best goals against team in the league just acquired one of the best two way forwards in the league. But sure, Leafs D sucks |

Probably more likely to take a team friendly deal to come back to St. Louis than he is to do so in Toronto. He was already talking about being willing to take less to be on the Blues going forward. - Antilles
He did buy a big house in the Beach and built one right next door for his parents in 2019. |

Tell what you don’t know. ROR is a minus 24 this year. I know that plus/minus isn’t the perfect stat, but it does provide insight. And you next comment will be he is on a bad team. Stop living in the past like Stan Bowman and thinking past performance will solve all your problem. I’m not against TOR, they just have an unbalanced team. The east is tough, and maybe ROR gives them grit they need. But it doesn’t change the fact they still need a goalie and defensive depth. I don’t fault the GM going all in, I would too if my job was on the line. |

Him being THE BEST goalie in the NHL? - AdamFrench[/quote No. The problem is the tremendous pressure on the leafs to just win ONE playoff round not the Stanley cup! And if they are lucky enough to win a round then the pressure will increase to win the cup! I just think that the picks they gave up will come back to bite them because the players they got are by no means the last pieces to get them a cup but we shall see! |

Did the Blues re-sign Barbashev to a new 2 year contract for $3M per?? Looking at Cap Central it looks that way.??? |

Does anyone have a stat for:
“how many Teams have won the cup when picking up rentals”?

The leafs won the trade and good for them BUT....THEY NEEDED DEFENCE NOT ANOTHER FORWARD....this will NOT put them over the hump - Donovan
A little early to judge. The Leaf propoganda outlets also said Leafs won the Foligno deal before the deal ever happened. |

Hahaha! Or is this a putrid leaf’s fan that knows what’s coming! I actually feel sorry for you in a way it’s gotta suck that it’s been decades since the leafs were relavent! - Bobd62
The Leafs have actually never been “relavent”
The word you’re grasping for is “relevant”

Feels like a win for Dubas to get a guy like O’Reilly for what amounts to the 27th pick and a few other scraps. I think there’s a good chance ROR signs for 3 or 4 more years in the offseason
Will this be enough to beat TB? Who knows? That’s a really strong team. But it’s still a nice piece of business to get ROR without touching Knies |

Tell me about living in the past. What is unbalanced about having the 8th best goals for and the 5th best goals against while playing in that very tough eastern division you mentioned? And if defence is important, how does bringing in a two-way forward plus a strong 3rd line guy hurt? I must have missed the bit where the Leafs just traded for Patrick Kane.
I get that it’s hard to generate new thoughts so you just slide along with what you think you know. |

Understandable move from the Leafs. Probably more to come because the East is such a gauntlet.
Rangers
Tampa
Toronto
Boston
Carolina
All five of these teams would win the West. Whomever wins the East will be too exhausted to win the Cup. |

Can O'Reilly play goal? - HenryHockey
Lol, if only the WIngs had a Samsonov. Check his stats and ask me if Toronto needs a starter. Something like 19-2 .924 at home and only lost 6 all year.

Agreed, people keep saying they need a goalie. Samsonov is a legit starter and a good one at that. However I agree the Murray signing was a mistake but we all knew that. Bring in Varlamov as a ufa to back up Samsonov and you got a tandem.

Leaf fans PLEASE let's put this trade into proper perspective. This isn't the Raptor situation in 2019 where they NEEDED to acquire a pure superstar. We have our top stars already.
I look at the Leafs in 2023 similar to the Islanders of 1979.
Islanders coming off back to back playoff dissapointments despite having the stars in Trottier, Bossy, Potvin & Smith in net. They obviously lacked a key piece to the puzzle. So they finally found it in a 1979 trade deadline deal for the Kings Butch Goring. He was the ideal support player/catalyst for their top stars. The Isles as we know went on to Cup successes.
Do not think of O'Reilly as a Kuwaii Leonard but more of a Butch Goring. O'Reilly isn't coming to TO to be our superatar. He's coming to be the perfect support player for our top stars as Goring was for the Isles. Obviously the last 6 playoff Leaf failures, a big reason was the lack of the right support players to our top stars. I believed several months back that O'Reilly if healthy & playing his game could be the " perfect" support player for the Leafs. If your going to battle the gritty players on TB & Bos you need gritty players like O'Reilly. So the Leafs are now solid on the forward lines. Now my only questions are in goal & on defense. I don't think it's bad idea to acquire a cheap backup goalie making under $1 mill. Lots of times have done the "three" goalie thing. It's good insurance in case Murray remains unhealthy. But the defense is the biggest question mark. Not enamoured with this core as a unit. |
