If Matthew’s is worth 20 then what is Marner worth? - Joe Nardone
Well if Nylander's dad, his agent played hard ball with Wliie's contract before when Willie still hadn't totally yet found his game, imagine how difficult it will be to re-sign Willie now that he is on the cusp of being a superstar. |

Someone please explain to me why Minnesota took on salary for this deal? They are so hard against the cap for the next few years due to their 2 big buyouts, but yet they take on 25% of the salary for a 4th round pick? Someone please explain what I am missing? |

Likely STL. Largely dependent on if Tor wins the cup this year. All rental trades are based around that.
ROR is definitely an interesting pick. The need for a 3rd line center is very real, however ROR isn’t having a good year.
Seems like an overpay at first glance. |

In regards to O'Reilly re-sigming or not in TO will likely depend on what happens in the playoffs. If the Leafs fail again to get past the first round & like Foligno, O'Reilly turns out to be a bust than like nor him or the Leafs will likely be looking at re-signing as a Leaf.
However if the Leafs go on a long playoff run even to the Conference finals like say 1993 where Reilly & the city fall in love with each other than he could possibly re-sign with the Leafs. |

Understandable move from the Leafs. Probably more to come because the East is such a gauntlet.
Rangers
Tampa
Toronto
Boston
Carolina
All five of these teams would win the West. Whomever wins the East will be too exhausted to win the Cup. - lacaprup
Yea, West was the hardest when Wings was there, and AVS had a better lineup than today. |

My co-worker is Boston fan & often thinks the Leafs are circumventing the system when they benefit from a desl like with Minnesota.

Who won the trade?
Any other team that had been contemplating a trade for Ryan O’Reilly. |
|

I think it's as simple as this...if the Leafs don't win the Cup this season, the Blues won this trade..hands down 100%. They got a boatload of picks in return. |

Blues win. ROR resigns in St. Louis in the off season. Army making shrewd moves - BluesDroogie
Who was the last player to leave for a cup run and then re-sign with the team they left in the summer. It’s a nice story but rarely happens. |

Feels like a win for Dubas to get a guy like O’Reilly for what amounts to the 27th pick and a few other scraps. I think there’s a good chance ROR signs for 3 or 4 more years in the offseason
Will this be enough to beat TB? Who knows? That’s a really strong team. But it’s still a nice piece of business to get ROR without touching Knies - AxlRose91
I wonder what the ask will be from O"Reilly? More than likely his last deal. I wouldn't be expecting a discount |

You aren't missing a thing. I think everyone is thinking the same. What up Mr Guerin |

So the Leafs give up:
- a 2023 pick around 25-32;
- a 2023 pick around 75th (Ottawa's 3rd)
- a 2024 pick around 54 or lower
- a 2025 pick around 118 or lower
- Mikhail Abramov - a former prospect who is no longer considered one of their top-15
- Adam Gaudette; a tweener who should at least get a shot to play some NHL minutes this year
The Blues give up
- Ryan O'Reilly @ 50% retained and with Minnesota's retention he's $1.875m
- Noel Acciari ($1.25m)
The odds are low that this asset capital traded lands a star player or even a player in the top-6/top-4. It can and if it does, good for the Blues.
O'Reilly has had a poor year - although you could say that the three games he has played since returning from a 2 month injury period have been the best he's played this year. If he can play at even 80% of last year's O'Reilly, he's more than what the Leafs want him for.
Acciari adds some grit and moxy with a slight scoring touch (that's better than what they have now) in their bottom-6. They need more energy and puck retrieval and both of these guys bring it.
It's a good trade that gives both teams what they need. Was O'Reilly my preferred player? Not by a long shot, but acquiring him without giving up any of their top-10 prospects still leaves some future assets for development and the retention allows for additional acquisitions if they become available.

Perron and Tkachuk both came back after being shipped out. I'm sure he'll consider his options, but don't doubt St Louis is one of them. |

I can't tell you why they did, but they do have about $3m in cap available to them still after this deal. Because of cap space accrual (the season is typically 186 days long, and the days after the TDL are around 40), there's a roughly 4.5x multiple on what your free capspace means at the deadline - meaning Minny's $3m still gives them over $13m in buying power - as long the contracts they acquire don't put them 10% over next year's cap ceiling.
I'm guessing whatever plans Guerin has will fit inside that range.

The Blues were going no where with or without ROR Leafs get a warrior and need that kind of grit if they hope to survive the first round of the playoffs |

I can’t really explain the why. Guerin had $12 Mil in cap space and now he has $10 Mil to get someone or facilitate deals for teams.
Guerin traded a 4th(Josh Pillar) who he wasn’t going to sign by June 1st for a 2025 4th pick. The prospect pool is full now so I guess he’s looking ahead. He gave up $74,000 in cash to pick up 25% of ROR’s salary. ROR would be the best center on the Wild but hey let’s help the Leafs get one.

St Louis..when Toronto gets bounced again in rd 1 they would have given up those assets for nothing. Toronto needs defense and goaltending not offense. Dumb move |
