It's not the player we're upset and/or confused about, it's the timing of the trade and the trading away of an extra 1st round pick acquired in the Bo trade and our 2nd rounder in a very deep draft. This seems to be a trade you wait to make in the summer when you know where NYI ends up. If they make the playoffs and the pick is in the 20s this year then yeah it's a great trade, if it's in the low teens or heaven forbid NYI crashes and the pick is an unprotected 1st in 24 that becomes a lottery pick, then you've just screwed yourself out of a high pick that could have got you an elite player on an ELC for 3 years leading into their prime. Again, it's clear the team is still intending to compete when everyone can see they need to tear it down to the foundation.

I would like the picks but we have to remember if we're picking around 20th what are we hoping to get? a top 4 RHD?
One of the big obstacles our club faces is that we have a bunch of forwards either in their prime or about to enter it and we have absolutely nothing coming up for Dmen.
Unfortunately, Dmen typically take longer to develop. Management saw an opportunity to acquire an ascending top 4 RHD who still has upside and went for it.
Whereas I wouldn't call it a great trade, it's not like we dealt the pick for OEL. There's certainly risk involved with the pick turning out to be top 15 this year or even higher next year On the flip side, the draft picks themselves certainly offer some risk and for all we know they could select another soft winger or two.
