Which is why the CHIQUORIN move was so necessary IMO.
You are now planning on handing critical spots (Levi, Johnson) to players who you hope can handle it right away.
Not to mention being this risk averse can be a dagger to a franchise.
How many times have we penciled in prospects dating back to Guhle, Bailey and Baptiste and mancari etc only to have them fall short.
I hope Adams proves us wrong and pulls a unicorn trade out of his ass. - ImThatGuy
Oh I agree. But maybe Adams was afraid Johnson wouldn’t sign? Idk. Still a lot of work to be done.
Maybe they get a goalie for the next 3 years? |

They haven't done that yet. That's us expecting it to be the plan, but really the plan may very well be to have another year like this next season and wait for Levi/Johnson to grow in the AHL. This team could very well be a year behind fans schedules and that's why Adams isn't making moves. He knows 2022-23 isn't it, maybe he also thinks 2023-24 isn't it as well. He could be the long long play of 24-25 and beyond |

Ottawa only keeps their puck this year if it is a top 5 pick.
So yes, then can miss and still hand Arizona a premium pick.
Every draft class has misses, but this age group is loaded. - Swedish_Jesus
Pre game yesterday with Rob and Dan one of them said that Ottawa players felt they should be rewarded with help because they have played so well and battled through injuries all year.
I’d have to assume so of the Buffalo players fee the same.
I hear every year how the draft class is loaded. Last year was also loaded, the year before that as well.

I absolutely know that, it’s just tough to move a first round pick in a draft class like this without the certainty of an extension.
Neither Meier or Chychryn came with an extension. As much as they’d help Buffalo today, their best days are coming tomorrow.
Ottawa very well could be trading two top 15 selections in back to back years for players that may not be on their roster come 2025 which is a huge risk. Everyone always likes to think of the best case scenario, but never the worst.
There are going to be some studs in that 15-20 range this year that can be the guy that comes in on the ELC when the Sabres are in their window.
They could also make me happy and acquire my dark horse target all along in Nick Schmaltz for a 2nd and a 3rd by Friday and I’ll be content.
Whether the Sabres make the playoffs or don’t make the playoffs I’ve seen enough to assure me we are in for a good decade of hockey - Swedish_Jesus
My god man, we’re not all in this for 5-6 years down the road.
I don’t care if we ever draft again. This has been 11 years of this nonsense talking about first round picks |

I also think the team being in a playoff race with 5 games in hand tells Adams that this team has a difference of opinion of where they stand….. |

It's fine if you want to hope and go with internal growth. But you have to have the players to do that. Sabres don't have that Defensively. Interesting that some of these trades that went down Young Dman went back in them. Sabres don't have that, atleast enough Depth to use a young Dman in a trade. - Buff36
Need to pull off a VO+ for a D upgrade in the worst way this summer.
No more assessing. Everyone knows where the weaknesses are and where they have prospects.

Arizona GM Bill Armstrong says he wasn't looking for young NHL talent or prospects in Chychrun deal and why return landed for future picks only. - Stripes77

And we had an offer for chicken man. Coyotes went with the sens. So 2nd place sort of |

Chicken still had two more seasons at a very good price. He could have helped them win now and the next couple of years. His contract didn’t have great term but there still was term.
If the Sabres could have made that real push he could have been re-signed. If not and he wanted out you could have dealt him for at least a first in two years.
Would have had him for 2 seasons at the cost of 2 second round picks when it was all said and done. Or he could have signed an extension. - Stripes77
A) They could have resigned Chychrun but then you’d have half a d-corps making elite money and I don’t think there is a precedent for that
B) I highly doubt they would trade Chychrun in the middle of a playoff run either.
Like I said, I see the logic of both doing the trade and not doing the trade.
At the end of the day, Adams is putting more emphasis on the next 12 months to get it right cause he is out of excuses to not make the playoffs next year at the very least |

Armstrong is talking out of his ass again, he said that when Chychrun first went on the block and has been saying it since. Not only did I say it but so did the folks on Sportsnet and TSN. Armstrong is full of S$$T. |

If that's the case, then, on paper, Adams could have at least matched it. It's possible that the Coyotes think that Ottawa might finish lower than the Sabres, though? |

I missed the part where we waited 5 years for any of Mittelstadt, Dahlin, Power, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka to hit the lineup.

Dahlin is the only one getting elite money. Say he get $10 million per. Hell it could be more.
Chicken at 7-8 Power at 6 on a bridge and Samuelson at 4.
Having that good of a top 4 d making $28 million total. With how much those 4 would play that’s worth it to me. Especially having value contract of Tage and if Cozens keeps going… |

I wouldn't say all of those players excelled early in their careers. Plus other than JJ those are all top 10 talents, their timelines are sometimes different. Where the Sabres are picking the next few seasons I don't expect many of them to be up right away or even in a year. And I don't expect many of them to contribute on a consistent basis for a few years, especially if they're defensemen. |

Mitts was awful until this year. - drafted in 2017
Half the fan base wanted Dahlin gone last year - drafted 2018
Dylan Cozens - 2019
Also having 1OA picks helps.
The Sabres won’t have that. There is probably of 90% chance that the Sabres pick in this draft will be 3 years away.
Thompson was picked in 2016 took him m 6 years. |

It looks like Nashville are sellers. Maybe we can get Saros out of there

If the Sabres were smart, which I think they are for the most part considering the extensions they have handed out to date, they wouldn’t bridge Power.
