No. You can't just bring back a player after you make it crystal clear you want him gone and tried 3 different ways in the span of a few months to get it done. At that point, you have to bite the bullet. The Flyers put themselves in a position of extreme weakness where Arizona knew they had no choice but to pay the ransom as their last resort after Plan A (waivers), Plan B (offered leaguewide for a pittance) and Plan C (Expansion Draft) all failed.

If I remember correctly, the cap was flat so the price to eat salary for the cash strapped teams was through the roof. Whether the Coyotes wanted him or not wasn't the issue, the issue was the Coyotes had massive leverage and they used it. The Ghost trade situation had as much to do with the state of the league in 2021 as it did with his play. It's like trying to sell your house during the housing crisis and the Flyers were underwater on their mortgage. Sure you can sell your house but is it worth it?

It makes sense that with cap space being as precious as it was that no teams were going to take a flyer on a Flyer in the dog house with cap and term. It was a poor use of assets and he chose the worst possible time to unload him. I think the bigger consideration for Fletcher was that he really coveted Risto and Ghost needed to go to make his dream come true.

As the Athletic said of the Risto trade :

Sometimes I can't tell if it's just incompetence or an attempt at smoke and mirrors. The Flyers play so passively defensively. So that a player like Ristolainen just has to cover a small area and it hides his complete lack of hockey sense and propensity for bad reads. His hits/60 is down almost 2.5 hits compared to the 21/22 season. Ristolainen has been hidden and compensated for. He hasn't improved at all. The Flyers have just dummied down their system and style of play.
