It could very well play out that way. However I can give the Flyers at least some slack in deciding to re-sign Coots. A guy that is much more versatile and improves the production of just about everyone that plays with him, and is therefore far more impactful game in & game out than JVR. But in the end, to your point, that extension has the potential to be a disaster.

If that was the intent then Bellows and Lyksell would be in the lineup and Braun/JVR would be sitting out.
