Who's the centerman, Reichel? Wonder if Reichel plays center or wing during this callup? ..
- Mr Ricochet

This current Hawks team has to be the worst team in the history of the NHL, and I know that there’s been some bad ones.

Rocco Grimaldi is finally joining the Blackhawks organization, albeit just the IceHogs. KD needs to sign him to an NHL deal stat!

I don't remember it, but i heard that Pitt team when they were tanking for Mario was pretty poor, and they barely beat out the Devils team that was also tanking.

Agree with what you are saying, to an extent.

There is no way KD is going to use all of them to draft players and hope to develop them all. That takes forever. If a team gets 2 NHL players per draft they are doing fantastic, far better than most of the teams in the league.

Some of these draft picks will be going in trade to teams with cap problems or with good young players they don't have room to promote from the minors or to pick off good NHL players currently playing in the league.

Trading and accumulating lots of picks is great, the real test for KD is coming down the road with how they will be used to build the NHL team into a contender.

- RickJ

Right on, Rick. But it even goes further than that, it will take the whole organIzation to be competent every step of the process.

Amatuer scouts to evaluate properly for the draft/trades, pro scouts to evaluate the prospects once they turn pro and to evaluate trades, proper development paths decided the executed, the advanced stats department to add value to the process and the organIzation to collect and use the information in a manner that it's useful.

And of course KD at the tip of the iceberg to make decisions, lots and lots of them.

A long process with each and every prospect/player that each tentacle of the organIzation will probably touch.

I have not seen anything on retention for Domi. Taking a bad contract back probably was enough to secure the deal. This means we still have one retention left -Anathesiou??

EDIT: Awh! I guess too early to make that assessment, but hoping KD kept that retention spot.

The fact they won 21 already should get LR some Adams considerations. I am not kidding, either

Imagine if he gets a chance to coach a team with legitimate NHL players.

I know everyone is focused on the tank for the 2023 draft, but there's some high end talent in the next couple drafts also.

The Hawks are assuredly still in tank mode in 2024. Names like Celebrini, Eiserman, Levshunov, Kiviharju . . . could be as deep a top-4 as this year (although there's not a Bedard).

Depending how things go, 2025 is a toss-up. Misa and Gavin are names to know.

And while the Hawks better be trending up by 2026, there's always McKenna (Bedard's cousin who is already pacing some of his age group records).

We hope its a plan. We still don't know if KD is good or sucks. Maybe he thinks these players are good. With all due respect to Lafferty, he did sign him to a multi year deal
- Elbows15

Fair enough, but if i were to rebuild a team its exactly what I'd do. By trading away any quality players you ensure getting the best draft pick avaliable even if you lose the lottery.

Exactly. And per my post above, this is a great three year window to be awful (in terms of top end talent available).

And that made him more valuable, the good ol cost control.
- LAHawk
Maybe or it could be the retention on McCabe that made him more valuable.

He isn't going to cost much in either case and to set the record straight. I am happy for Lafferty. He was trending to being an AHL lifer, got a chance and made the most of it. The Leafs think a lot of him to dump Engsvall to get him playing time.

All: Which team out there has the longest potential SC window - I would say NJ. Very young corp and just a poop ton of talent. It sure feels like KD is tracking this model to a T. Stack the pipeline with high end talent till the cupboards are overflowing - thoughts all?

Did you guys see Gretzky on TNT last night welcoming Kane to the Rangers and reassuring him they were going to love him?

It was weird

We know he's an awesome tearer downer. (Though I guess he's running neck and neck with )

As much as it is bad, its the right way to do it if your going to do a tear down and rebuild for the long term.

- vabeachbear

I don't disagree but the tearing down is the easy part. He is going to need to find the right vets to help shepherd the next group along. That won't be easy. Look at how long the Sabres and Oilers have been wandering in the wilderness because they took forever to fin the right mix.

Darren Dreger tweeted that Buffalo promised to find a new team for Bjork. And KD is accommodating them. Buffalo still needs a RD. KD may be laying the groundwork for a Murphy trade this summer.
- boilermaker100

What is the need to trade Murphy? His contract isn't a liability unless you think we're up against the cap and trying win a Cup next year.

It's the route i would go, but i don't remember a team accumulating 1st and 2nd round picks like this ever. Although I'm old and my memory isn't what it used to be.

He'll be around for Tank 2.0, the sequel for '23/'24. Need a couple of vets making $$ for the cap floor if nothing else...

So I know its sacrilegious to question the greatest GM of all time, but does it make sense when rebuilding to extend Larkin and trade away your other better players for future picks which we've all learned over the last few days won't be any good or contribute for years from now?

Will they be any good during Larkins reign?

- vabeachbear

VBB, that's the question right now. Agree with your points about DET moving NHLers for picks when it seemed they turned the corner on the rebuild.

That has the hockey world wondering what is Stevie Y's next step? Is he gathering picks to move them for established NHLers better than the ones he moved out? ..... We'll see before puck drop on next season.

He probably will be around for at least 2 more years. But the reason is not to get to the cap floor. The reason is that he is not good at hockey and his contract is untradeable even retaining 50% and even at a TDL where teams are overpaying for Dmen.

The Yotes just picked up Voracek's contract. Gotta stay above the floor so they can trade more players.
- 333inthe3rd

Something like 57% of their salary cap this year is players that will never play for them
