I refuse to make any salary predictions until the Bally Sports fiasco (and the other local rights holder network) is resolved.

This isn't my area of expertise, but in general when a vacuum opens up where there is money to be made, someone will be there. I'm not that concerned - I know maybe I should be - but if I'm a sports streaming service, I'm already talking to the NHL about how I could be a fit - and I'd expect a number of suitors. If I'm the NHL I'm weighing those options as well as how quickly I can get my own platform off the ground to manage regional coverage and what the costs of doing so would be. I've read that their cool to that idea, but they really shouldn't be.

The thing with streaming is that there are a number of competitors in that market space and once you have the architecture in place, it's not that formidable of a task to make local deals with broadcasting affiliates or establish additional ones. I'd say the largest challenge the NHL faces is that it doesn't really control the content - it's all regionally owned and supplied - and the fees are distributed based on market and demand - so the smaller markets are harder to provide a profitable service for - and the profitable markets which might offset your losses are already owned and operated independently (like LeafsTV or MSG).

I guess what I'm saying is that in my mind the NHL may lose some revenue in the next deals they need to make, but I keep thinking it won't be that drastic.

Has any team ever actually done anything with "insurance?" Hurricanes had Cam Ward, but he was their 1st round top prospect rookie. Penguins had Murray, but he was their top prospect rookie. Avs had Francouz a bit, but he was also already their legit backup.

If you lose your starter/back up, you don't go far unless you have a prospect who catches fire.

Exactly. If it was Rittich a couple of years ago or Lankinen this year, it doesn't matter. It might as well be Kallgren or Woll. It's up to the team to win, then, not the goalie to pull a rabbit of a hat.

Because in their inaugural season they selected a washed-up has-been who played really well for them?

They're hoping lightning can strike the same place twice.

But it won't.

It's weird nobody has really talked about Toews during this slew of deals.

I'm pretty sure I read that due to health concerns Chicago was not going to be trading him.

He is staying in Chicago, thus no discussion. He has had long covid, and hasnt been able to play.

All the best to him. Hope he gets healthy. Signs a short term deal and gets traded to the leafs next year to lead the leafs to back to back cups

this is really the first time I have ever felt this way, but why hang onto any 1sts at this point?

trade the 2023/24 picks, and if you get someone with a little term left (Hello Wilson/Saros) with those picks you have better value.

i dont see the Leafs ever being closer than now, and not again for a long time
