When did this one happen? I don't remember it.
Regardless, from what you're showing, it looks bad to me.
I don't see any reason to defend the Watson hit, though. I think he pretty clearly made contact with the head first. And after hitting the head with his shoulder, he proceeded to make contact with the head again with his elbow.
I'm not making a judgement on a length of suspension. But, I thought kicking him from the game was justified.

Not arguing the game misconduct at all. Or necessarily "defending" the hit. But if you read through all the stipulations of rule 48.1 it doesn't really qualify as an illegal check to the head that should result in some kind of suspension.

did not realize his numbers were that bad at this point

He's playing 21 minutes a night on bad team. So gotta take that into account.

I don't totally understand how getting hit in the shoulder and not hitting your head on the ice gives you a concussion. And again, I'm not even criticizing Trouba for the hit. I think the right call was made.

Watson's should objectively hit Motte first and the elbow came up later. I mean, look at Tom's screenshot. It's clearly his shoulder.

- eichiefs9

Bolded part 1: whiplash
Bolded part 2: his screenshot is before contact was even made. you can argue it was slightly above his elbow but lower than his shoulder that made the intial .0001 seconds of contact before his elbow shot all the way up into his grill.... he was jumping though.

moral of my story is those hits have nothing to do with each other. i've always liked you and felt like we are usually on the same page. now i hate you and you are my mortal enemy.

I disagree where the initial contact was made but putting that aside for minute. I think my biggest problem is open ice hits, etc are fine. But that Watson hit was straight up predatory. granted that is also a subjective view, but no one will ever convince me otherwise.

And just for some perspective I thought the hit on Lindgren was fine by Oshie.

"fine" meaning illegal but not suspendible?

Certainly a nasty hit and you could argue that it was boarding and he was rightfully tossed for it (I didn't see it live and don't ultimately know what exact penalty was called) but I don't think it's an illegal check to the head.

The Oshie hit on Lindgren was filthy and you're dumb. (Just staying on-brand here)

I didn't think it was a penalty. Just an unfortunate circumstance where Lindgren was in that bad space by the boards. A bit closer to the boards Lindgren is fine, a little farther away, Lindgren is fine. Its that dangerous spot where someone gets hit like 3-4 feet away from the boards.

isn't that why there's a rule against hitting in that exact spot on the ice? boarding? that's like the textbook definition

to cap it off "The onus is on the player delivering the check to avoid placing a vulnerable or defenseless opponent in danger". directly from the rulebook. the anus is on the player delivering the check

Just remember you’re debating with people that believe that K’Andre Miller accidentally spit on Doughty.

Well I mean i always thought boarding is subjective. Some cases are pretty clear. The Oshie one I mean its a fast paced game, are you supposed to get your measuring stick out? I look at boarding more as a hit from behind etc. not a hit from the side.

I saw it. I still think a hit from the side shouldn't be boarding. Hit from behind would be my definition because a player is defenseless in the sense he doesn't see it coming etc. A hit from the side Lindgren knew Oshie was there but still decided to shoot the puck in. There has to be some acknowledgement that the offensive player can't put themselves in a vulnerable position. Its like the players who would always turn their back at the last second to get the boarding call. They actually stopped penalizing the checking player in that situation, which I love. Cause players were purposely doing that to draw the boarding call
