Seemed like they dropped Dahlin's minutes last game and it was about as good a game I can remember for Samuelson.
Just saw Greenway is playing tonight. - Hatboro_Swords
Yeah I don't think Dahlin is 100% so they were monitoring his minutes.

From Lance's latest in the snooze.
Farewell
Victor Olofsson and Rasmus Asplund are best friends, former roommates and, now, each other’s cheerleader from afar. While Olofsson continues his career in Buffalo, Asplund embarks on a fresh start with the Nashville Predators after his trade Friday afternoon.
“It’s obviously tough,” said Olofsson, who has been a teammate of Asplund’s since their time in Rochester. “He’s one of my best friends. It’s a little bit bittersweet. He hasn’t been playing a lot here, and I felt like he needed to get back to playing hockey again. It’s a good opportunity for him to prove himself. I’m happy for him that he got the opportunity, but it stinks to lose him here. It’s the business part of it, though. It is what it is.”
It just lines up too nicely with some of our recurring topics not to share. |

GOG line tonight.
Are the Bills gonna pay Edmunds?
Feels that way to me.
What's the players feel on Frazier not getting fired, but not coaching next year?
Could that influence tremaine's decision to return?
A friend mentioned that Frazier really didnt put tremaine in the best position/screem to succeed. |

Asplund is a prime example of our inability as hockey analysts to properly identify good/bad defense.
You don’t suddenly go from Selke votes to traded for a 7th if you’re an elite defensive forward.
Defense has so much to do with what a player does away from the puck and out of sight that I believe it’s impossible to properly grade it.

Sometimes guys are paper dragons. That's the problem with a strictly analytics based approach to valuing players.
If you watched asplund live, he wasn't doing anything selke related. He was an anomaly.... the outlier....
Best of luck, probably should have kept risto and borgen and left asplund available for the expansion draft 🤔 |

Tony Granato fired at Wisconsin. More to follow.
Does he join his brother on the Sabres staff? |

You may want to rethink that. Going from 7-3-1 to 8-1 and protecting 4D means you have to take 3 F's off your list. That would have exposed Tage.

He had some good years with the Kings. Definitely could show them how to be a pest. |

Anyone know why they don't have Sabres alum in the Seneca Sports Lounge signing autographs during intermissions this year? Did it during most home games last year. |

This might shock you, I was just talking out of my ass 😀
Good catch.
I was fishing, where the boat tows a line or lines with one or more hooks with a natural bait, or what is more common, an artificial lure on to target fish swimming in the upper layers of the water column. |

Some interesting backreading.
Always funny when a Sabre move or two causes someone to have a break with reality.
In two short weeks, the Leafs and the Sabres went grit, grit, grit at the dealine. The two teams we've been assured by the expected awesome crowd are the best analytics teams in the NHL. And, to make it worse, Tampa saw the Leafs moves and went even grittier if possible.
Pegs may never recover.
"Teams were trying to bully us. The #1 Sabre fan in Buffalo had been saying it for months on hockeybuzz, and I finally had to listen." -- Kevyn Adams - lacaprup
The irony being Sandin had 3 assists in his Caps debut and the Leafs have been dominated in the analytics battle and have been on the struggle bus lately since acquiring Schenn, McCabe, and ROR (apart from the game against us of course)
Tampa hasn’t won since acquiring Jeannot.
Like I said a day ago, this blog is living proof emotions dictate logic and not the other way around.
Score more goals than the other team, and you win the game.
You can also defend well without being overly physical, Zemgus Girgensons is proving that this year, Asplund did it the year before, and Larsson the years prior to that.

Try hard to want a soft team.
This is literally unheard of. A fan wanting a team to be soft. Its sad.
Is it because hitting is banned in Sweden you are against it? - sabresfan69

Or he could join his mother at her hair salon and make more in tips than he would as a coach. |

maybe he did. Maybe he didn’t. Why would he have all the sudden forgot how to defend? |

Could be a variety of reasons. Perhaps last gear was an outlier season for him and he regressed to the mean?
Players have outlier seasons offensively to believe it or not. Nichuskin went a whole year without scoring a goal and had some of the ugliest offensive analytics in the league.
Jeannot scoring 24 goals last year shooting 19.4% is an example of that. Brandon Pirri scoring 25. William Karlsson scored 40 once upon a time.
Everything clicks for you sometimes.

My broader point is that I don’t trust the defensive numbers that say he’s terrible on D this year and I don’t trust he was Selke worthy last year.
I think defensive impacts are shaky at best |

Can't argue that but at the same time they didn't bring Manson in for his dangles. |

A couple of things to consider
Defensive skill and defensive impact aren't necessarily the same thing. I don't believe Asplund's defensive skill suddenly went away. I think it's more likely that whatever scheme Granato is using this year is less likely to create the sort of scenario that would allow his skill to translate into meaningful results. In the same way, I would expect a forward whose offensive impact is driven by shot volume to have less of an impact here than he would in say Carolina.
The other thing is purely a guess on my part, but I think defensive numbers have a lot more "noise" in their data. It exists in offensive data too, but since we have a clearer picture in the box score/play by play data, it's easier to cut through the chaos and find what a player is bringing to the table. Defense is tougher because ultimately, your value is heavily determined by how much doesn't happen and a lot of unrecorded events (like players out of position).
In Asplund's case, it's a 27 game sample with no consistency in GP and six different line combos, only one of which he played more than 30 minutes with. That was Mittelstadt and Olofsson. We know how they were defensively early on. Hard to draw a clear picture based on the information provided. |

They didn't bring him in for his hitting either. He was, at his best, an exceptional stick checking/positional defensemen. They were hoping to recapture that. |
