Kubalik? the guy who had his hot streak and had 26 points in his first 26 games, and since has 13 in 38? The guy who was healthy scratched, and plays 3rd/4th line minutes? Notice he didn't get moved by Stevie Y. like the other 4 he sold off on, probably because he is worth the same as last trade deadline - zero/zilch/nada.

Outside of the goal, do you (unless you were really watching because he was a Blackhawk) even know he was playing, outside of the passes he biffed and turnovers?

So when people talk about "asset management", that's great, but who knows what was offered for the likes of Kubalik or Strome.

I'm sure he would've taken a 2nd or 3rd rounder for either but based on the fact both were RFA's with QO's around $4m, I'm guessing no one was offering that.

Exactly, people here whining about not getting anything for Kubalik and Strome are delusional. Nobody offered anything for them because they could sign them for cheap in the offseason. Also their scouts said ‘yeah this guy is at best a middle six and definitely will not drive possession on their own line, they’re a passenger.’

Kubalik has been invisible since his hot start. Strome is getting overpaid at $5x5, and Washington will learn that quickly. I’m ecstatic to not have those two on the team, eating up $4+ a season for their eternal potential. The guys we have in the system now are hungry, and haven’t coasted by on having good hands or a good shot for their entire career.

I agree. Kinda hilarious that nobody wants to see Athanaseu come back for $3 mil. when he is a better all around hockey player than Kubalik at the $4 mil Q.O. Because of injury Kubalik started on Larkin's line at the beginning of the season, and of his points almost 1/2 are on the PP. What do you think Kubalik's stats would look like if he was on the Hawks this year?

With that team you still need about 20M for the remaining few players to reach the cap floor. I wouldn't be surprised to see AA back for 1 x 3M and Domi back for a few years at 4 to 5M. I also could see an expensive 5M or so cap dump forward on an expiring contract coming this way in a trade, hopefully packaged with a 2nd round pick.

Edit - And then there's Toews. Maybe or maybe not he's back for a few million.

I agree, this was just what is in house and signed next year.

Maybe they resign Stalock, and buy out Mrazek. it would only be $900K and $1.4M against the cap the next 2 seasons. Even though 35, I would give Stalock 2 x $3 mil (overpay but the Hawks need a few overpays like this, and he would serve as a good mentor to Soderblom.

You're right, i mean they didn't even get a NHL contract? oh wait they did, but it was for league minimum? Oh wait it wasn't. Kubalik was so bad he got a 2 year contract, probably why he'll be traded next year, for the NHL not AHL. And Strome got a 1 year deal and turned it into 5 X $5 million.

I will reiterate we had a ROOKIE GM, notice this year he didn't wait till the trade deadline to make deals? Was active for the past month, month and a half.

In economics i belive they call that an opportunity cost. With all my whining I'm very happy how things turned out. Really impressed with KDs choice in coach, wheeling and dealing this year, the little gems he unearths from other teams. Tinordi is really growing on me i love how he handles his business in his own end can't believe no playoff teams wanted him.

Looking ahead to next year....(mainly based on who is already signed)

Top Line Reichel, __________, ________
2nd Line T. Johnson, Kurashev, Raddysh
3rd Line D!ckinson, Bjork, Guttman
4th Line Katchouk, Blackwell, R. Johnson
Extra Forward Entwistle

Top Pair S.Jones, ________
2nd Pair Murphy, ________
3rd Pair __________, _________
Extra Dman Zaitsev

Goalie Mrazek
Goalie Soderblom or Stauber

KD fills in the remaining 6 slots with perhaps our #1 draft pick (Bedard? or Fantilli?), free agents (plenty of cap space), prospects (no reason to rush anyone).

Still a lottery team next year.

I think the goalie situation will revolve around whether Commesso or Basse sign. If one or both do sign there will be a long jam in the minors along with Stauber and Soderblom. This would open the door for Soderblom to be promoted.

If the two collegians do not sign, then maybe we will see Mrazek/Stalock in Chicago and S & S in Rockford. Chances are good there will be injury call ups. Then possibly there is a TDL trade of Mrazek/Stalock, giving one or more of the prospects an opportunity.

Both signed for less than their qualifying offer would’ve been. Strome was always going to get additional contracts because he was a third overall pick and has coattailed McDavid and Kane to relevance his entire career. Notice in Arizona he did nothing, and when he wasn’t paired with a star here he did nothing. He’s on the third line in Washington, isn’t on either power play unit and doesn’t kill penalties… but yeah his $5x5 deal from a Stan Bowman 2017 level GM is definitely not an overpay…

Kubalik got a $2.5x2 deal, look out world. Out walked the ghost of Brenden Perlini and Hawks fans will never forget it. A guy who doesn’t board battle, backcheck, or do anything but shoot. Also playing third line on a bad team. Second unit PP. Doesn’t kill penalties.

You Kubalik and Strome fans need to put the NHL 23 controller down and realize we really didn’t lose anything letting them walk, we simply saved money by not qualifying players that nobody wanted at the deadline.

So no playoff team would of wanted Kubs or Strome at half price for a playoff run? Because they could of let them walk as well. I just don't buy it, but i get it everyone disagrees with me, like Kane not wanting to leave Chicago.

It does make sense to me, i bet he didn't really want to trade Hagel or wanted to wait and the GM made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Maybe just maybe he thought I'll just wait out these teams for Strome and Kubs but those GMs moved on to make other deals.

ADDED

Although now that I'm doing something else, when i usually do my best thinking, i wonder if he kept them because he wanted the Blue Jackets to get the worst pick possible, because if we won the lotto i believe the Blue Jackets would have our 1st round pick this year.

That's probably why he waited on Dach and Cat during the off season

It’s time for our bi-annual Columbus scr*wing. 2015 it was Saad for Anisimov, 2017 it was Panarin for Saad, 2019 we got the year off, 2021 Boqvist and two firsts for Jones.

2023 they’ll get the #1 pick, and we’ll get the consolation. Hopefully Kyle has Jarmo’s number blocked.

For all his yappin’ about importance of draft capital, you’d have thought he’d have better asset management when he first took the reigns. Lots of missed draft capital

I'm changing lanes, i realize now he didn't take any offers to trade them because he wanted to do everything he could so CBJ got the worst draft pick available. I bet he was sweating during the lottery actually hoping the Blackhawks didn't win the 1st or 2nd pick. Traded Hagel because that GM had to have him. Waited till the offseason to trade Dach and Cat which makes compete sense to me now. Sometimes i can only see the tree and not the forest.

KD is playing chess while I'm playing checkers over here.

Which really makes me wonder if the trade with Toronto was targeted to hopefully make our 1st and 2nd round picks better from the Bolts this year.

Where’s Raddish? KD getting rid of him? Actually Kurashev, Raddysh, and say Domi would be part of a decent 3rd line, unfortunately they are top line on this team.

Accidentally forgot about him.

I also forgot about Toews signing a one yeaar $10 mil. contract so the Hawks can get to the cap floor (RED FONT).
