No it wasn't a huge risk at all. They gave up future considerations to acquire him. Then able to put him on LTIR to get cap space. That's a move that was a no brainer for Carolina. - MJL

Yeah. They gave up nothing and ultimately gained space to get deeper with Puljujarvi and Gostisbehere instead.
Not the end of the world. |

I still can't believe Chuck did that.
And of course now we have Ghost too. Canes have gone 7 for 12 on the powerplay since Gostisbehere joined. - BINGO!
I'm cheering for the Canes this year.
I'm finally over the Whale moving. |

He was pegged as this missing piece, it didn’t work out and they didn’t add any additional forwards. If they come up short again in the playoffs it will probably be due to the forward group coming up short, again |

Yeah, after he was waived and cleared the first time, he was sent to the Phantoms for 12 games and then recalled again. Torts did not dress him at all but the Flyers did not send him down despite being waiver exempt. He finally dressed in the final game before the ASB because the Flyers lost two forwards to injury in the Minnesota game.
The Flyers still could have sent Bellows to the Phantoms without waivers for a few days during their long schedule hiatus, but elected instead to allow the waiver exemption clock to run out and kept him on NHL roster.
He was subsequently waived again.... and cleared again. He could have been paper moved to the Phantoms on Clear Day (last Friday) to be eligible for the Calder Cup playoffs but that didn't happen unless I missed the announcement.
So he's in a perpetual healthy scratch state until this summer when the Flyers will clearly not tender him an RFA qualifying offer and he'll be turned loose as a UFA.
I feel for Bellows here. He has AHL feet, unfortunately, but he can certainly help the Phantoms even if Torts determined quickly he wasn't going to be part of the NHL lineup. Not saying Torts was wrong in that assessment. But there seems to be a bit of tug-of-war here: Torts won't play him and the org won't send him down again.
I have no other explanation for why Bellows never went back to the Phantoms despite dressing only as a last resort. - bmeltzer
Many are aware of this, so why claim him? To add to it Bellows does not seem like a player the coach prefers.
So at the end of the day seems like a wasted claim as didn't even try to make it work.

They're 40-10-7 without him this season so I'm not sure how much they were "relying" on him, so to speak. |

Clearly, despite all the public handholding, Chuck and Torts are mired in a bit of a power struggle. Wouldn't be surprised if they each had their own factions in the front office/alumni backing them. - Tomahawk
I wonder whose dog Bellows killed to have this done to him. More BS organizational malfeasance. Seems like Bellows would have been a good addition for the playoff push in the AHL. All that talk about getting them playoff experience blah blah blah.

He's supposedly a goal scorer and the team is starved for goals. That's probably as much consideration as they put into the acquisition. Makes you really wonder about the pro scouts... like could they really not notice the guy had cement feet or did Chuck just ignore them? Either way, it's so Flyers. |

People keep saying this but the truth of it isn't that the forwards stopped scoring, it's more that the goaltending and defense fell apart against the Rangers.
They outshot the Rangers 235 to 183 but got outscored 20 - 13. 20 goals on only 183 shots in a goaltending issue.
I'd also argue the Canes are a FAR deeper team this season than last. On pace to score more than last season.
They're a little older, a little better, and a little deeper all around than last year. |

I get it. No one wants to see thousands of fans celebrating a hated rival’s win in your building. It tastes like your grandmother’s worst liver dish. It’s not coming fast enough for Flyers’ fans, but there’s going to be change. The moment John Tortorella’s name appeared on that “this year was the first step in building the future of the Flyers” letter in February, it signalled where everything was going. The as-yet-undetermined part is how deep this rebuild will go, but there’s a chance it will be more significant than expected. One governor said this week that, early in the season, comp tickets for Philadelphia games were up 50 per cent over 2021-22. Nothing delivers a message louder than that.
Prior to the Chychrun deal, the Flyers were scouting AHL Belleville. Whatever was going on there is likely off the table, but it would have been interesting.
9. I don’t think there was much with Kevin Hayes and Carolina, but I do think there’s something with Columbus. Two of his biggest fans — Johnny Gaudreau and Rick Nash — are there.

I have no issue taking a chance with a player but play him. Either on the Flyers or the Phantoms once he is eligible to be sent down. It's awful to just put a stop to a kids career with nothing to gain from it. |

It's taking him a bit but the points are finally matching his play. Brind'amour and Samsonov have done a ton of work with him.

Sadly, Ryan Ellis was really good in the one week (opening week of the 2021-22 season, three games) he played for the Flyers last season before his one-game return in Dallas in Nov 2021 and then permanent return to IR/LTIR. - bmeltzer
And Danny Tartabull was really good in those 3 games he played for the Phillies.
