Anyone bashing hextall is obviously a younger flyer fan. One thing I can guarantee when hextall became gm he wanted nothing but the best for the flyers. He hasn’t failed in Pittsburg he became gm when the core has become old.

The core there is definitely old, but he failed to make the right moves for them to make the playoffs. That's what was expected of him when he kept the older core together instead of selling off valuable assets.

We're locked into the 7th spot, pre-lottery. Would be brutal to get booted down to 9th. Maybe we get lucky for suffering through this last season.

Last year record is almost a tie this season with the Sharks for the 4th seed. The hockey God Torts (for some), is just a hair better than last season mess with AV & Yahoo Yeo.

I generally defended hextall with you guys, at least thought his grade would largely be incomplete given what his conflicting objectives appeared to be.

I don’t think the pens job was easy for a number of reasons. However, even without hindsight I find it hard to defend him.

That Blackhawks lineup 😂

Amazing with all the blank checks, aggressive retooling and Torts that the Flyers have managed to only win 4 more games than a nakedly ranking team.

😂😂😂

The team is much improved and significantly better than last year. Why can't you see that? Tortorella is the Jack Adams award winner. Hands down.

As they chant in Nashville
"It's all your fault! Its all your fault"
Da da da da da HEY, you suck!

Hextall wis clearly the guy on the ice who couldn't beat the league cellar dwelling Blackhawks. No blame on the core at all.

Clearly all hextall....
How dare you, sir!

Penguins fans are even more delusional than philly fans.😂

Their run is over! (Until they get a ping pong ball) 🤬

There isn’t a GM in the league that could have turned them into a top flight cup contender, unless he had a Time Machine. But for the things that he could control, he did a bad job.

Oh he had no chance to do anything relevant this year. Making deals is not hextalls thing but he did do a really nice job of cleaning up the wasteful cap hits here.
I think hextall knows that this team needed to trade some big name players on the pens but he was handcuffed by the PR and upper management to make sure that he kept rhe core intact, even though they really had no shot at anything beyond, at most, a first round exit.
I've said before that he had no assets to trade and no prospects to sell off. What did the fans expect him to do?
And I am FAR from a hextall supporter. In my opinion his drafting sucked and it has set the flyers back significantly, but I don't know what he could have done to get anything substantial to make a playoff push.

If I am wrong in any way, I am open to explanation of what he could have done to better this team, while keeping what little assets he still had.
Compared to every other metro team, why would he waste a first rd pick only to be knocked out in the first round? I feel like if he traded his 1st round pick then next year he would have caught backlash for trading away the pick....

Hextall failed to build any type of adequate supporting cast, countless mistakes year after year, and the outlook going forward is even worse. He blew their last chance at being competitive, even if they got in they would have been dismantled quickly. The defense is this man is beyond pathetic by yourself and others in this board

Torts by far has done the best coaching job of any coach in the NHL this season. He may not be a candidate for the Jack Adams award based on its definition, but he deserves best coach this year IMO.

I do agree that it’s not the easiest position for him to be in. But virtually every move he did make outside of the big signings (I’ll even include rakell and rust in them. Rust was average this year but that’s not a deal people were opposed to in real time) was awful at the time, no hindsight needed. Hell, I’ll even excuse the carter one because you totally could explain that one at the time and in a vacuum no that doesn’t sink the team. But everything else, woof.

His best moves were cleaning up his own mistakes. I’m not granting credit for that.

Like I said, this isn’t some oh if only stupid hextall did X or Y then they are a cup team. That’s simply not reality. But it’s not hard to see that this should have been a playoff team but for his incompetence.

(Yes, beat the last two bottom feeders and they’re a playoff team too. That’s on the players. Both can be true.). But they should have never been on the fringe like they were.

They lost to way too many bottom feeders all season long, though. With The amount of cellar dwellers that they lost to they truly don't deserve the playoffs. If they had beaten even one more of those teams then they are in the PO.
And hextall is not a GM you hire to get you into the playoffs. He is the type who will clean yp the cap and have tou relevant in 5 to 7 years. He was a poor hire from the start for this team.

I wouldn’t with a straight face tell you that the team as constructed necessarily deserved the playoffs.

But it was lunacy to not bring in an external goalie. That’s not hindsight. That’s insanity. It’s not unfair to say that’s the single reason they’re out, and anyone could see the potential for that this time last year.

The kapanen love affair. The ruuta signing was laughable. The petry exchange, I suppose if you squint you could see that hey he wanted to try something but that also doesn’t require a ton of hindsight to see that it’s a bad idea.

The granlund trade is literally let me just see how much I can (frank) with these guys level comical.

Did you hear that Risto haters? Risto leads the defenseman in scoring on the Flyers since January (18 points) and in +/-. I told you once he got comfortable playing the way Shaw wants him to play the offense would come.
