Is that because Benning is linked to Calgary? - NewYorkNuck
Even if only one of those comes true, it will be glorious. |

Zero chance - CanuckDon
They liked the defense going into this past season, so why change it up too much. Plus OEL is a leader in the room. |

Gillis would turn them around - Jkuzzi
A large piece of Gillis success came from the pieces he got maturing at just the right time, and Nonis had cleared a huge amount of cap space that trade deadline and then got canned. So Gillis came in with a strong core in place - Sedins, Kesler, BXA, Edler, Salo, Mitchell, Hansen and had cap space to add some difference makers.
Gillis promptly threw that free cap at Sundin 2x$10m which was basically 2-3m more than anyone good in the league and Sundin didn't show up until Xmas which was a major distraction. He signed Demitra but that flamed out somehow
Good move was not to re-sign Naslund, and he got deals done with Sedins. Notably Burkie was also on a plane to sign the Sedins literally just before they signed with the Canucks so that could have broken either way.
I don't see him as all that great - right guy at the right time to capitalise on the Burke and Nonis years. The entire Luongo Captain thing was a mess, Sundin was a mess, celebrating like he won the Stanley Cup after winning Game 4 (Canucks up 3-1 games) was amateur at best. I think the fact that he isn't back in the show is prof enough he was a flake at the right place at the right time |

Ya, clearly don't think that's gonna happen... but on the outside chance they get Bedard, maybe they could convince Aqua to buy him out |

The owner won’t pay simple as that. We are stuck with OEL |

I’m back after my work hiatus lol
So using this as a template only…
https://canucksarmy.com/n...ass-offers-defenders-2023
I’ve gone on about UFA D & what I’d do. Starting with Gavrikov for a fair price in 2023. He adds defensive top 4 LHD depth. Graves is another target but my gut says he might cost more. It requires a winger going out either Boeser or Garland. That’s where I find cap space. Better if Myers could be moved instead but he’s gone anyways in 2024 freeing up cap for a 2024 RHD UFA. Peace is the gold standard with other good options. If this is the plan then OEL would be bought out then & not this offseason.
2024/25 D
Hughes Pesce
Gavrikov Hronek
Hirose Bear
Rathbone
Bear shouldn’t cost more than 2m or much north of that.
Devon Toews as top 4 LHD would also work but again probably too rich for us. That will be a pricey D corp whomever makes it up. 2024/25 cap space should see a hefty bump once the players escrow is paid off. Haven’t gone totally in depth on the salary structure but guessing the wingers will need better cap management control.
Summary:
2024/25 should really be the season to get serious about being a playoff team & then some. The 2023/24 offseason will give us a better idea on how Mgmt approaches the coming seasons. |
