That’s right up there with the Cam Neely trade. - LeftCoaster
The fans cried for a big UFA signing & got Barry Pederson. Damaged goods. |

The owner won’t pay simple as that. We are stuck with OEL - CanuckDon
I mean, he would SAVE 9 mill over the course of the deal by buying him out, and save millions upfront over the next few years. He's either gotta pay for the buyout, or pay the contract... unless he thinks OEL will go on LTIR before 25-26... but he can't know that. |

A large piece of Gillis success came from the pieces he got maturing at just the right time, and Nonis had cleared a huge amount of cap space that trade deadline and then got canned. So Gillis came in with a strong core in place - Sedins, Kesler, BXA, Edler, Salo, Mitchell, Hansen and had cap space to add some difference makers.
Gillis promptly threw that free cap at Sundin 2x$10m which was basically 2-3m more than anyone good in the league and Sundin didn't show up until Xmas which was a major distraction. He signed Demitra but that flamed out somehow
Good move was not to re-sign Naslund, and he got deals done with Sedins. Notably Burkie was also on a plane to sign the Sedins literally just before they signed with the Canucks so that could have broken either way.
I don't see him as all that great - right guy at the right time to capitalise on the Burke and Nonis years. The entire Luongo Captain thing was a mess, Sundin was a mess, celebrating like he won the Stanley Cup after winning Game 4 (Canucks up 3-1 games) was amateur at best. I think the fact that he isn't back in the show is prof enough he was a flake at the right place at the right time - TJTD
Lefty ignores all this when he claims best Canuck GM ever. Notice he makes no comment on this post.

I didn’t ignore it, it’s completely true, there’s nothing to debate there. My statement is completely disingenuous, but not untrue LOL!
Truth is, every successful GM inherits from the GM before him. It’s just the way it is. That wasn’t unique to Mike Gillis. |

I'd put a bonus clause in Tocchet's contract. Payable upon OEL's LTIRetirement. |

It’s wild. I mean OEL only wanted to play in Van or BOS. I don’t think his intention was to come to a new City and instantly become hated. His body became broken and useless at age 30. My body worked at least until I was 40. What a (frank)ing mess |

Yes but he's gonna make 10.5 mil next year with his broken down body. |

Goalie as captain and all the bullpoop that came with it was definitely unique to Gillis. I also don't remember any Canuck GM trying to sign a 40+ y/o over the hill player like Sundin for 2 years at $20m(prorated at todays market would be much higher). Luckily Sundin chose 1 year instead... which turned out to be 3 or 4 months in the end. That Sundin signing was pretty unique... |

But like most situations, his achievements were shared as you pointed out. In Gillis' case, much more of the work had been done previous to his arrival. |

No NHL employment 10 years later to date pretty well settles any argument about his tenure.
