An interesting(?) tidbit from the Canes' perspective:

Brind'amour stuck so heavily to his matchup game that Kotkaniemi ended up leading the Canes forwards in even strength Ice time.

Aho had among the least. Imagine that looks different on the road, but also he's gonna be fresher for longer if you're only having to play him 14-15 minutes per night.

- BINGO!

Canes were better in pretty much every single metric last night except goaltending...still only a 2-1 win though all decided by special teams. That Sorokin must make you sweat a little haha. If the games play out like this the Isles can definitely take some, or 4.

Kind of how one expects these to go.

Canes are going to create a ton of volume, though not a ton of high quality chances. Sorokin will be Sorokin.

Isles will need to capitalize on the odd man rushes and breakaways the Canes give up. And they gave up a lot of them last night.

That's a lie hahah... I didnt even look at it for this game but know from all the 5 on 5 stats on Natural Stat Trick it would say Canes deserved to win.

Towards the end of the regular season the Sabres got shellacked by the bruins like 7-2 or somewhere around that number I don’t remember exactly. The Sabres were 78% Win O’Meter victors in that game.

Yeah the Sabres had the advantage in high danger chances 15-10, out shot attempted them 55-39 and out shot them overall at all strengths....but their goalies really sh!t the bed...sounds like most of the Pens games this season, really haha

Islanders have been losing the metric game for years. Means nothing to me really when you look at their decent playoff success the last five years(minus last year of course). They beat plenty of metric darlings along the way. Islanders didn’t play their best game yesterday. This series is winnable for us. Whether they do or not is a different story but the series won’t be won or lost on metrics. That I know.

Islanders were metric darlings under Trotz. There's a lot more to the games being played than metrics though, of course. Things advanced stats will never be able to quantify and its also a very random variance sport.

When did that happen? I remember you telling me we didn’t deserve to sweep you because the metrics didn’t say it should happen.

That's not quite true. They still had bad offensive metrics under Trotz and were never picked to win much in the playoffs any of the years they advanced past the first round. They had very good defensive metrics yes, a little better than they currently do, but there was still plenty of people in the media/analytics circles that were highly critical of the Isles offensive numbers.

OK, if you count shorties given up as goals.

Haha.....watching a giveaway at the blueline, turning into a shortie is maddening.

This offseason the isles (Lou) should focus on bettering the PP, be it a new assistant coach, and or a player or two. Its been average at best, and awful most years.

hahaha That wasnt me. The Isles were clearly the better team. That was also back when they were the Perimeter Penguins...rarely went to to the net at all...that would never work vs those Trotz Isles teams haha. I might of said that after 2021...Jarry being sh!t and Sorokin being a demi-God some games is mostly why they lost that one.

Isles were in bottom half of all advanced metrics this past season. I think you're right about the offense ones back then though. Isles were methodical with how they protected their own zone and net back then.

Just fantastic. Only hope we have as far as PP is Barzal gets his game together real quick to give us a maybe mediocre PP at best.

Yeah Sorokin scored some nice goals in that series if I’m remembering correctly.

The isles static powerplay coupled with the canes high pressure pk leads me to believe the canes will have more shorthanded goals than the isles ppgs

I could actually see this happening.

Too bad we can’t decline powerplays.

There's a theory going around that Rod yells at the refs so much because he doesn't want the Canes to get powerplays. They get more momentum from killing penalties than from their poopty powerplay.

It’s a possibility. Canes PK is very effective against the indecisive nonsense that is the islanders PP.
