Wow. I love the big brain ideas here. I can't wait to hear refs not answer questions LIVE just like coaches and players! Wow! Amazing!

I just try to take it one call at a time.

Gotta keep my head on a swivel.

We've got a great officiating team here - it's great to know I can trust the guys.

Yeah, the Toronto officiating room is great - knowing they have our backs, just allows us to do our jobs even better.

Really?

It seems pretty straightforward to me.

The ref sees an obvious penalty.

Then the ref makes a decision on whether to call it or not, based upon the following factors:
- time of game
- whether the player making the infraction's team is winning or losing game
- whether the player making the fraction's team is winning or losing the series
- reputation of player
- reputation of player who was fouled
- number of penalties already called on offending team
- number of penalties already called on other team
- differential between two teams on penalties
- where on the ice infraction occurred
- home game or away game

Pretty simple. What don't you get?

- Atomic Wedgie

Thank you I feel so stupid, it's all so simple!

I think they said on overdrive yesterday the leafs haven’t won a series in 5 games since the 60’s or something.

There are a number of ways to look at this.

1) The NHL should where possible avoid placing themselves in a position where the perception of a conflict of interest can be questioned - particularly with them being party to billions of dollars of gambling revenue.

2) Wes McCauley has been an NHL referee for 20 years. Throwing that career away over a petty squabble with Sheldon Keefe would be a ridiculous thing to do to himself, his family and his reputation.

2 can trump 1 pretty easily, but money talks. If questions arise around the potential conflict where their gambling interests lie, they'll do something about it - but until then, I think we can all rest assured that Wes McCauley may not like the Leafs, may not like Keefe, but he is a professional ref who just really likes making himself the focus.

Not so sure he is so innocent here. If anyone saw the first period of game 1 where Leafs had 3 minor penalties to 0 for Tampa and one of the goals resulted from a slapshot from 0 inches away by Perry on Samsonov. The officiating was sketchy to say the least. Frost is not allowed to have anything to do with hockey in Canada and is this guy's brother in law. Professional my ass, the fact that he may not like the Leafs or Keefe is enough to recuse him here. No bias should be tolerated.

And of course theee guys are never wrong and never have any ego involved. ( please insert sarcasm detector here )

What is reason that Bunting is treated as he is... he has embarrassed the officials.

If the officials were truly impartial then there would be no carry over from one game to the next.

So, I simply ask "Is there.. how else does a player get s reputation "?

I find it interesting that since the NHL went to the 2 ref system, there has been a significant reduction in the quality of games being called. That says all we need to know.

It's rather interesting and telling ol showboat Wes after that game and media attention very quickly moved him to other series. Including a stint as the backup emergency ref in the Carolina series. While the league wont say a thing, especially given Bettman's words about the officiating being fine, even the hint and media attention on a possible conflict of interest is something they will want to avoid and let die down. I think at least for this round we don't see Wes near the Leafs.

Fanbases around the league ALWAYS complain about tge refs. Nothing new there.

This one is a bit different though. The media highlight of potential bias and conflict of interest, true or not, makes this something the league has to address. Plus all it takes is connection to David Frost 🤮

Look at it this way. They put Wes in Toronto gets rediculous calls again, bam media with negative uneanted attention. OR Wes comes in starts overcompensating calling Tampa and Bolts are gonna yell refs got influenced by media attention. Its no win by the league either way. League just quietly lets it die and uses Wes elsewhere till at least after the first round.

And pretty sure fanbases complain about any and every ref all the time. I've never heard a fan say 'I hope we get ref x or y, they are fantastic'

Yup, it’s the right call to hold off on giving him another game, even another round won’t go over well. That being said the league needs to support their refs and not allow the overblown media of Toronto to control their decisions.

That’s because his haters are biased as hell and don’t deliberately go look for the proof that they are incorrect lol
