That was the Rielly draft year.

1 Nail Yakupov (RW) Edmonton Oilers
2 Ryan Murray (D) Columbus Blue Jackets
3 Alex Galchenyuk (C) Montreal Canadiens
4 Griffin Reinhart (D) New York Islanders
5 Morgan Rielly (LW) Toronto Maple Leafs

Are any of the first 4 still even in the league?

- PrinceLH

Why is it showing Rielly as a left winger?

Ahh, the pick from Detroit that landed two Cups in Tampa. Imagine getting two Cups by trading Kyle (frank)ing Quincey. Sure, a lot of other factors came into play, but Tampa doesn't get Vasi without that pick from Detroit.

Not really though. Like these guys are all still playing significant roles on their teams.

Honourable mention to Buffalo's 2 first picks being outperformed by their second round pick in Jake McCabe.

In that year you did get Lindholm, Forsberg, Hellebuyck and Vasilevskiy, I'm pretty sure. Oh yeah, I just cheated - Slavin, Andersen's re-entry, and a handful of useful guys like Parayko, Trouba, Murray, Dumba, Hertl, Teravainen . . . I don't know if it was the weakest draft, but the top-4 was definitely the worst in recent history!

Edit: And Aaron's post above.

You went deeper than I did though but I was surprised by how good that draft was to some cup winners.

It's just that almost all of them aren't worth much. That's why teams have been spending more of them at the deadline.

Detroit could have been set had they kept the pick and drafted vasi

Time to beat some more herpes riddled Floridians into oblivion!!! Florida has been worried about the rainbow of colors at Disney when all they should be worried about is Patone blue color #PMS 281 C.

Murray is somewhere with the Oilers now. IL for the last half the year, but practicing with them now as a black ace.

My buddy sent me a Reddit link about the Florida owner not wanting the game on Saturday because he has a horse in the Derby?

No shot the NHL should ever even consider this garbage, if it's true.

But you know they will, because they're pathetic.

The NHL also doesn't like competing against other "major" sporting events and usually concedes to them.

Again, data nerds are going to data nerd - I had a list of draft picks from 2003 in a sheet. If you say that a successful hockey career is 200GP, the 2007 draft is probably the worst since 2003 producing 44 players (2006 also produced 44 players, and fewer who played over 60 games - but the calibre of the player in 2006 was slightly better than 2007).

Hockey is a long ways off being top 3 in the states. Until that changes (if ever) this is how the league needs to be handled since if they try to compete with other events it will do nothing but lower the local fanbases.
